Crypto Market Recap — August 3, 2026

Top Story

Bitcoin and Ethereum both fell over the last 24 hours, with BTC down 1.32% to $62,611 and ETH down 1.39% to $1,848. The selloff hit the entire large-cap complex, dragging down XRP, SOL, DOGE, LINK, and ADA alongside the two largest assets.

The move carried real institutional weight. BTC and ETH combined for over $23.5B in 24-hour volume, signaling active repositioning rather than a quiet drift. USDT led all coins by volume at $25.54B, pointing to active cash positioning and de-risking flows.

BTC ETF flows turned sharply negative, with $265.4M in net outflows on July 31 alone. The 7-day total reached -$526.7M, driven by heavy redemptions from IBIT (-$122.7M), FBTC (-$54.8M), and GBTC (-$52.6M). That pattern shows institutions trimming exposure into weakness, not accumulating.

Fear & Greed sentiment sat at 27 (Fear zone), reflecting the market's cautious tone. BTC derivatives remained balanced—open interest held near $48.15B, just 1.38% above the 30-day baseline—but long liquidations dominated, with $10.67M in BTC longs closed over 24 hours.

Other Key Events

Coldcard exploit expands to $88.6 million in Bitcoin losses

Galaxy Research identified a third wave of Bitcoin thefts linked to a Coldcard firmware vulnerability, bringing total observed losses to approximately 1,367 BTC across 4,585 addresses. The latest wave alone stole 207.73 BTC.

The flaw traces to a March 2021 firmware build that routed seed generation to a predictable software randomizer instead of the device's hardware random-number generator. Attackers reconstructed vulnerable private keys offline and drained funds without accessing the physical wallets. Coinkite's security advisory specifically warned users who generated seeds on Coldcard Mk3 firmware 4.0.1 or later.

Galaxy Research warned that the attack remained active and urged affected users to move funds immediately. The exploit triggered unusual movement in small Bitcoin transactions, with Bitbo reporting approximately 39,600 BTC moved in sub-one-BTC transactions—the highest level since the FTX collapse in November 2022.

SEC keeps Nasdaq Bitcoin options approval on hold after CME challenge

The SEC granted CME Group's petition for review of Nasdaq PHLX's proposed QBTC cash-settled Bitcoin index options. The earlier approval remains stayed while the full Commission reviews CME's jurisdictional challenge.

CME argues that the contracts are commodity option swaps subject exclusively to CFTC oversight. Nasdaq's proposed contracts would track the CME CF Bitcoin Real Time Index divided by 100. Written statements supporting or opposing the approval are due by August 24, 2026. The SEC's review does not resolve the underlying jurisdictional dispute.

Cardano advances toward the Dijkstra development era

Cardano's van Rossem hard fork moved the network to Protocol Version 11 and began the Dijkstra development era. The upgrade's development roadmap targets initial deployments by the end of 2026, including Nested Transactions, Ouroboros Leios, Linear Leios, and Peras.

Market reaction was muted despite the upgrade's significance. ADA fell 0.29% on the day, contradicting earlier reporting of a 9-10% rally tied to the upgrade narrative. The discrepancy may reflect timing differences between the upgrade announcement and the 24-hour window captured in this report.

In Brief

  • KAITO fell 16.99% on $80.75M volume, driven by token-unlock fears. DropsTab showed a KAITO unlock in zero days worth $25.96M, while DeFiLlama listed an August 19 unlock valued at $33.31M (13.5% of circulating float).
  • ONDO dropped 6.24% on $95.32M volume amid macro de-risking and whale profit-taking. Non-exchange whale holdings declined from 7.6B to 7.58B ONDO, representing $7.8M in tokens.
  • CATE surged 184.91% on $26.75M volume, driven by a viral kitten video posted by Atsuko Sato (Kabosu's owner) and subsequent exchange listings on LBank and KuCoin. Sato explicitly denied affiliation with the token on July 28.
  • ICNT, BLESS, and BICO posted outsized gains (46.78%, 44.92%, and 27.09% respectively) with no confirmed catalysts identified. The rallies appear driven by speculative rotation into smaller caps rather than project-specific news.
  • PUMP fell 5.22% on $54.44M volume, continuing pressure on the Pump.fun ecosystem token.

What to Watch

  • BTC support at $62,000. A break below that level would put the $60,000 area in focus and test whether the current Fear-zone sentiment deepens into capitulation.
  • ETH round-number defense at $1,800. The next 24 hours will show whether buyers defend that psychological level or allow a retest of $1,750.
  • BTC ETF flows on the next print. Watch whether the -$526.7M 7-day outflow streak extends or reverses. Sustained redemptions would signal institutional de-risking; inflows would suggest accumulation into weakness.
  • KAITO follow-through on the unlock. Another heavy-volume red session would confirm distribution. Monitor DropsTab and DeFiLlama for clarification on the exact unlock date and amount.
  • SEC comment deadline on Nasdaq Bitcoin options (August 24, 2026). The outcome will determine whether U.S. spot-index options trading expands beyond CME's existing framework.

Charts

BTC Open Interest — 30-Day Trend: The chart above shows Bitcoin derivatives positioning over the past month. Open interest held near $48.15B, just 1.38% above the 30-day baseline, indicating balanced leverage despite the spot-price decline. The lack of a sharp OI collapse suggests institutional liquidations were orderly rather than cascading, consistent with the measured 1.32% daily drop.

Fear & Greed Index — 30-Day Trend: Sentiment has remained in the Fear zone (27) leading into August 3, reflecting cautious market psychology. The index trajectory over the past month provides context for whether current fear levels represent capitulation or early-stage de-risking.
