what is sUSDS? sUSDS, or Savings USDS, is a yield-bearing stablecoin token in the Sky Protocol ecosystem, formerly known as MakerDAO. It represents USDS deposited into Sky’s Savings Rate module, allowing holders to earn a variable protocol-funded return while retaining exposure to a dollar-denominated asset.

How sUSDS works

sUSDS is an ERC-4626 tokenized vault on Ethereum. Users deposit USDS and receive sUSDS shares. The number of shares generally remains unchanged, while the amount of USDS redeemable for each share increases as the Sky Savings Rate accrues. This differs from a rebasing token, where the wallet balance itself changes.

The Savings Rate is set by Sky governance and funded through the broader protocol surplus and system revenues. Sky’s sUSDS page lists the current rate at 3.60% APY in the supplied research. The vault supports ERC-20 transfers, ERC-2612-style Permit functionality, and real-time share-to-asset conversions. The base sUSDS vault charges no protocol fee.

The primary Ethereum contract is 0xa3931d71877c0e7a3148cb7eb4463524fec27fbd. Deployments also exist on Base, Arbitrum One, and Optimism, with cross-chain access supported through SkyLink and Spark infrastructure. sUSDS is not a separate blockchain and does not have its own validators or mining system.

Uses and ecosystem integrations

The main use case is on-chain savings. Instead of holding non-yielding USDS, users can hold sUSDS and receive value linked to the variable Savings Rate. The token is also designed for DeFi applications, including lending markets, automated market makers, liquidity pools, structured yield products, and treasury management.

Spark is a major Sky ecosystem integration, providing lending, liquidity, and cross-chain infrastructure. Other integrations identified in the research include Morpho-curated vaults, Aave markets where supported, Pendle fixed-yield products, and Curve and Uniswap liquidity venues. Support varies by network and application.

Who is behind sUSDS and where is it based?

sUSDS is a product of Sky Protocol, the successor to MakerDAO. Rune Christensen founded MakerDAO, which was created in 2014. The original Dai system launched on Ethereum in December 2017, and MakerDAO transitioned to the Sky brand in August 2024, with the rebrand becoming operational around 18 September 2024.

Sky is governed through community voting and SKY holders, including governance decisions affecting the Savings Rate. The protocol does not have a confirmed headquarters in a single country. The sources reviewed do not establish a conventional company as the issuer of sUSDS.

The Dai Foundation is an independent Danish non-profit foundation subject to Danish law and Danish authorities. Its stated role is protecting Maker-related intellectual property, not operating or controlling Sky’s autonomous smart contracts. Skybase International operates the Sky.money interface but states that it does not issue the tokens or control Sky governance. The definitive legal entity and jurisdiction of the sUSDS protocol itself are therefore not publicly confirmed in the supplied sources.

Tokenomics and security

CoinStats recorded a price of $1.11, market cap of $4.65B (rank #37), and 24h volume of $5.83M at 00:38 UTC on 1 October 2026. Circulating supply was 4,183,748,632 SUSDS, compared with a total supply of 4,183,751,335 SUSDS. The all-time high was $1.29, the current price is 13.85% below it.

sUSDS has no fixed mining schedule or confirmed maximum supply. Supply can change as users deposit USDS into or redeem assets from the savings module. Its central economic mechanism is the changing USDS-per-sUSDS exchange rate, which reflects accrued value. The snapshot does not identify the distribution of the small non-circulating portion.

Security comes from Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus, Sky smart contracts, governance, oracle systems, and cross-chain infrastructure. Risks include contract vulnerabilities, governance changes, oracle failures, liquidity constraints, bridge dependencies, and changes to the variable Savings Rate. Audits and formal verification reduce development risk but do not eliminate it.

Competitive advantages and roadmap

sUSDS combines stablecoin exposure, automatic compounding, ERC-4626 composability, and multichain availability. Its yield is linked to Sky’s broader surplus rather than solely to one borrower or lending market, while the standard savings product is designed without a fixed lockup.

Current development centers on expanding USDS and sUSDS across Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Unichain, increasing Spark liquidity, developing Pendle and Morpho products, and advancing Sky’s Endgame structure. The wider ecosystem includes Stars such as Spark, Grove, and Keel. Future rates, integrations, and supported networks remain subject to Sky governance.
