  • The implementation would allow Tezos developers to create privacy-conscious dApps

Developers look to integrate Zcash's Sapling into Tezos to enable privacy-conscious dApps

New privacy-enhancing features could be coming to the Tezos blockchain, as developers look to implement features that are currently present in Zcash. A proposed Tezos upgrade dubbed »Edo« would implement Sapling, a protocol created by Zcash developers Electric Coin Co., into Tezos. Sapling was first activated on Zcash in October of 2018 and drastically reduced the costs of shielded (private) transactions.

According to NomadicLabs, Marigold and Metastate, the backers of the Edo proposal, bringing Sapling to Tezos would simplify the process of creating privacy-conscious dApps:

»Our proposal allows smart contract developers to easily integrate Sapling in their smart contracts and create privacy-conscious applications. Because Tezos can be amended, it was possible for us to add this exciting new feature directly to Tezos itself.«

Nomadic Labs first announced that they were working on implementing Sapling on Tezos in December last year. In the recent update regarding Edo, the teams say their integration of Sapling has already gone through »extensive testing« and enhancements.

Alongside the Sapling integration, the proposed Edo upgrade also includes bug fixes, performance improvements, and »tickets«, which simplify smart contract development.

The Tezos upgrades keep on coming

The backers of the proposal noted that they are announcing Edo only a couple of weeks after Delphi, the most recent Tezos upgrade, went live:

»Although Delphi went live on November 12th, it was proposed on September 3rd. In the intervening months, we’ve been hard at work on the core Tezos software, and we’ve made significant improvements that we want to share with the users of the network.«

The Delphi upgrade’s primary goal was to reduce gas costs, which was achieved by changing Tezos’ gas model and upgrading the interpreter for the Michelson smart contracts language. If the community approves the Edo upgrade as well, Tezos users will also be able to enjoy enhanced privacy options in addition to the gas improvements brought by Delphi.

Tezos is a smart contract-enabled blockchain that’s best known for its on-chain governance process. The Tezos blockchain is secured through a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. The mainnet was launched in September of 2018 after the project raised $230 million in a 2017 ICO

XTZ, the native asset of the Tezos blockchain, is currently the 18th largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. The token has recorded an 85.7% gain year-to-date.
