Polkadot, the much-hyped blockchain protocol created by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, is gearing up for its first ever community gathering. The event promises to be a day to remember, not only on account of the talks that are in store, but due to the involvement of Ampleforth. The developers of the algorithmically-adjusted cryptocurrency have revealed they will be building on Polkadot, with further details to be revealed at the day-long event.

The inaugural Polkadot Decoded event takes place on December 3 and will feature a packed program of talks related to parachains, cross-network bridges and Polkadot’s unique sharded infrastructure. Wood will also appear for a fireside chat with journalist Laura Shin.

Although advanced technical knowledge and development skills aren’t required, the showcase is likely to interest both seasoned Polkadot developers and novices intrigued by the buzz emanating from the ecosystem.

From Mountains of Capital to Mainnet

After raising over $140 million at the height of the 2017 ICO boom, Polkadot entered development hibernation before finally launching its mainnet in May of this year. A highly scalable sharded protocol that enables projects to deploy their own blockchains (parachains) secured by the network’s Relay Chain, Polkadot has become one of the most talked-about projects in the cryptosphere. Undoubtedly, it’s one of the most technologically advanced blockchains to see mainnet launch.

Polkadot Decoded is an opportunity for developers to get a handle on the multi-chain network’s key features and use cases, and to meet the people behind the code. People like Tomasz Drwięga, a core developer at Parity Technologies, one of two companies behind Polkadot (Web3 Foundation is the other). Drwięga will run one of the key slots at Polkadot Decoded entitled “The Vision of Interoperability: Parachains, Bridges & Oracles.”

Drwięga’s colleague Fabian Gompf, Parity Technologies’ VP, will meanwhile cast an eye over the parachain landscape to give an overview of the blockchains currently connected to the main Relay Chain.

Polkadot Is Attracting Top Talent

Polkadot has already attracted over 280 projects, from crypto wallets and decentralized payment gateways to oracle networks and fundraising mechanisms. Some of the best and brightest startups will be in attendance on December 3, not least Acala co-founder Ruitao Su. Acala is a cross-chain defi hub and stablecoin platform featuring staking, trading, borrowing and governing mechanisms. At the moment, it’s probably the best living example of defi on Polkadot.

Expect Su to answer the implied $6 million question: why not build on Ethereum like every other defi project? The answer could well entice other project leads to explore what Polkadot has to offer – starting with Ampleforth. The project has been added to the agenda for Polkadot Decoded, when its team are expected to shed light on what they will be building on Polkadot and why.

The Blockchain of Blockchains

Touted as an interoperability solution, Polkadot allows arbitrary data to be transferred across blockchains, whether they’re open and permissionless or private and permissioned. Theoretically, Polkadot makes it possible for developers to build apps that obtain permissioned data from a private blockchain and use it on a public blockchain. This is achieved through the use of parachains and parathreads, the latter working on a pay-as-you-go model and connecting to external networks via bridges.

Gavin Wood recently took to Twitter to show this process in action, posting a video of the “first successful inter-chain asset transfer on Polkadot using the new XCM format/standard/protocol.” The idea of swiftly swapping digital assets between parachains is certainly novel, and it’s bound to get some air time at Polkadot Decoded. XCM, incidentally, is Polkadot’s cross-consensus messaging protocol.

Those interested in attending Decoded can register for free at Crowdcast. With Vitalik Buterin recently admitting that base-layer scalability on Ethereum remains years away, it’s probably a good time to see what Polkadot’s top brass have to say.
