SportsIcon, a sports-related non-fungible token (NFT) platform, is connecting sports fans to their sporting heroes via exclusive digital collectibles that showcase career highlights of some of the world’s most well-known athletes.

SportsIcon is built on Dapper Labs’ engineered Flow blockchain

SportsIcon is backed by some of the most prominent tech investors, such as the CEO of NBA Top Shot Roham Gharegozlou and the founder of Youtube Chad Hurley. Additionally, the company is also partnered with famous athletes, including 13-year NFL veteran Michael Vick, accomplished soccer star Romelu Lukaku, and NBA Champion Andrew Bogut.

SportsIcon uses the same blockchain technology as NBA Top Shot, one of the largest NFT platforms in the world. Flow blockchain is designed for high throughput and provides nearly instantaneous transfer speeds while at the same time retaining incredibly low transaction fees - making it a perfect option to facilitate NFT platforms.

When talking to TechCrunch earlier in the year, SportsIcon co-founder Chris Worsey said that the key difference between the company and its competitors is in the unique content that is packaged along with SportsIcon NFTs. The exclusive cinematic quality footage is split into two filming days - the first part includes “interviews about their journey and their past,” while on the second day athletes are filmed on the training field, Worsey explained. 

Fans will be able to experience the high and lows of an athlete's journey while also getting to see their talent on display when training. Each athlete’s NFT collection will consist of 27 unique digital collectibles and will be divided into nine distinct chapters, with each subsequent chapter introducing rarer digital items.

The next two drops that will take place on SportsIcon are sure to get soccer fans excited. The first one will include the journey of the iconic Mexican soccer club Pumas that has won seven national league titles over its more than 60-year long history. The collection will allow Pumas fans to purchase unique pieces of the soccer team’s history - the most affordable ‘Pumas Home Gold Edition’ NFT starts at the price of 1 FLOW.

After Pumas, the next drop will take fans on the impressive journey of Belgian-born soccer star Romelu Lukaku. Fans of the Chelsea FC forward can choose between Bronze, Silver and Gold Pre-Mint passes, which grant different levels of perks, such as recurring airdrops of special edition NFTs throughout each month in 2022.

SportsIcon Lion Club members can connect with some of the greatest sportspeople of all time

Perhaps one of the more thrilling aspects of SportsIcon is the so-called Lion Club. The company has sold 9,000 unique Lions at 0.04 ETH each, and generated $1.4 million in Ethereum sales in under 14 hours.

Each Lion grants membership to the exclusive SportsIcon club which provides sports fans with exclusive access to their favorite sportspeople, gives out exclusive tickets to real-world sporting events, access to private social channels, and more. For instance, Lion Club members were joined by NBA star Baron Davis for an exclusive webinar and a Q&A session on October 28.
