India in Talks With Iran on Safe Passage for More Than 20 Tankers

India is reportedly negotiating with Iran over the movement of more than 20 tankers that remain stranded near the Strait of Hormuz. This route is one of the world’s most important energy corridors. The vessels, carrying crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and liquefied natural gas (LNG), have been caught in the chaos created by the recent conflict in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway, but it carries about 20% of global trade. As a result, any disruption in the region will have an immediate global impact. For India, the stakes are obvious and high as it is the world’s third-largest oil consumer.
The country imports roughly 85% of the crude oil it consumes. A notable share of this comes from Middle Eastern producers. That makes this India-Iran tanker passage issue less about politics. Instead, it is more about keeping refineries running and fuel prices stable.

India-Iran Tanker Passage and Energy Security in the Strait of Hormuz

The number of ships in the area remains significant. The government revealed that 28 Indian-flagged vessels are currently operating on either side of Hormuz. These ships are carrying 778 Indian soldiers. The Indian Petroleum Ministry said,
“Authorities, ship managers, and recruitment agencies are coordinating closely with Indian embassies and local authorities to ensure safety and provide assistance to Indian seafarers.”
People familiar with the ongoing talks say the vessels waiting to cross include shipments of crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas, and liquefied natural gas. Several cargoes belong to Indian refiners such as Indian Oil Corp and Hindustan Petroleum. A prolonged delay would tighten supplies just as domestic demand remains strong and disrupt India’s energy security.
Diplomatic activity between New Delhi and Tehran has intensified over the past week. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reportedly been in touch with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. However, he did not mention the ships.

Despite the current tension, some vessels are still managing to cross. Shipping data shows cargoes passing through the strait earlier this month. This even included a crude tanker that eventually arrived in Mumbai, India.

Amidst this, there has been a lot of buzz on X regarding the India-Iran tanker passage. Most reports suggest that Tehran has allowed Indian-flagged tankers to move through the Strait of Hormuz. But several on X and an Iranian source have been denying these claims, adding another layer of ambiguity. While things continue to remain volatile and unclear, speculations continue to rise.
While India is suggesting a passage deal existed, Iran seems to be denying it, yet a tanker made its way to Mumbai anyway. Certainty could arrive only after the rest of the ships reach India safely.
