Algorand has unveiled a roadmap to make its blockchain quantum-resistant by 2027, outlining major infrastructure upgrades designed to protect network data and user assets from future computing threats. According to Algorand Foundation Chief Technology Officer Bruno Martins, the initiative will introduce new cryptographic systems and consensus changes before quantum computers become capable of breaking current encryption standards.


The plan arrives as governments, cybersecurity agencies, and technology companies increase preparations for the potential impact of quantum computing. Many experts believe future quantum machines could eventually compromise cryptographic systems that secure digital networks, financial infrastructure, and blockchain platforms.


According to Martins, Algorand intends to deploy new account structures based on Falcon, a quantum-resistant signature scheme. These accounts will form a key part of the network’s strategy to strengthen long-term security while maintaining blockchain functionality.


Beyond account upgrades, Algorand also plans to modernize its consensus infrastructure. The blockchain will replace cryptographic components that currently lack quantum resistance and introduce new security measures for accounts participating in consensus operations.

Algorand Expands Quantum-Resistant Infrastructure Across Its Network

Martins said the foundation is researching multiple approaches to ensure a smooth transition toward quantum security. One option involves combining traditional cryptographic signatures with quantum-resistant alternatives through a hybrid security model.


The roadmap follows growing industry attention on quantum computing capabilities. Earlier this year, researchers at Google published a study suggesting that breaking modern cryptography may require fewer quantum resources than previously estimated. The same paper identified Algorand as one of the most quantum-ready blockchain networks currently operating.


Meanwhile, several major blockchain projects have accelerated their own preparations. Ethereum and Solana developers continue exploring quantum-resistant solutions, while Tezos recently introduced a prototype blockchain designed to withstand quantum-related attacks. Circle has also released a roadmap aimed at making its Arc blockchain quantum-ready.


Outside the cryptocurrency industry, governments have started implementing stricter quantum-security requirements. France’s cybersecurity agency ANSSI recently announced plans to stop certifying products that do not include quantum-resistant encryption. The move seeks to encourage organizations to adopt quantum-safe technologies before the end of the decade.


Similarly, the United States National Security Agency has directed all new national security systems to use approved quantum-resistant algorithms starting in 2027. Existing systems that rely on older encryption methods must be phased out by 2030. Researchers continue to debate the timeline for practical quantum computers. However, several recent studies suggest that machines capable of threatening current cryptographic standards could emerge before 2030.
