Vitalik Buterin Sells 211.84 ETH for $500K, Donates Proceeds to Charity

Vitalik Buterin has once again turned his cryptocurrency holdings into charitable contributions. The Ethereum co-founder swapped 211.84 ETH, valued at approximately $500,000, for USDC on the Base chain. The funds were immediately transferred to Kanro, his biotech-focused charity. The move continues Buterin’s established pattern of liquidating assets for philanthropy. 

According to on-chain tracker Lookonchain, the transaction did not cause any disruption in the market. Since 2025, Buterin’s total donations to Kanro have surpassed $3 million. At the time of the donation, Ethereum was trading at around $2,360, which confirms the donation amount.

Buterin Donates $500K to Charity

Kanro was established in 2023 as a philanthropic initiative by Vitalik Buterin to address COVID-19 and related pandemics. Initially, the fund focused on research to prevent airborne diseases and develop technologies for pandemic preparedness. Over time, Kanro expanded its mission to include a wider range of advancements in biotechnology.

To ensure a smooth donation process, Buterin exchanged 211.84 ETH using the Cow Protocol on the Ethereum mainnet. This transaction quickly generated exactly $500,000 in under 30 minutes. The funds were then transferred directly from his Gnosis Safe wallet to Kanro’s designated address. The entire transaction sequence was verified publicly by blockchain explorers. 

The donation enhances Kanro’s ability to support emerging biotech grants and initiatives.

Others Mirror Buterin’s Philanthropic Move

Vitalik Buterin’s generosity to Kanro extends beyond this latest instance. The Ethereum co-founder previously donated proceeds from memecoin sales, including roughly $916,000 from Neiro and over $1 million from various tokens in early 2025. In 2024, he channeled hundreds of thousands from MOODENG sales to Kanro for airborne disease tech. 

Buterin’s philanthropy extends beyond Kanro; his earlier contributions included billions in SHIB to the SENS Research Foundation and significant ETH donations to effective altruism causes. Other crypto leaders have also adopted similar philanthropic trends. For instance, Blockchain payments firm Ripple donated $25 million to support the U.S education sector through its stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD). 

Additionally, Binance Charity, the philanthropic branch of the global crypto exchange, also launched a $3 million relief effort in response to the devastating floods that affected Valencia, a city in Spain, in 2024. Meanwhile, Coinbase’s Brian Armstrong emphasizes the importance of mission-aligned giving within the sector. 

These examples reflect a growing earn-to-give ethos among prominent figures. Overall, the donation reinforced admiration for Buterin’s consistent ethical approach to wealth.
