What to Know

  • Zcash will let eligible coinholders vote on major NU7 changes through privacy-preserving governance requiring one million ZEC for valid results.
  • Voters will decide issuance reforms, block timing, transaction fee reissuance, Sprout retirement, and rollout priorities using secure validator oversight mechanisms.
  • ZEC remains above key moving averages while balanced momentum supports market stability before governance participation determines broader network legitimacy.

Zcash has scheduled a coinholder vote on its upcoming NU7 network upgrade, allowing eligible ZEC holders to decide several protocol changes that could influence the network’s future direction. The governance process begins on Aug. 25 and will remain open for approximately 18 days.

The vote introduces Zcash’s newly developed Tokenholder Voting Chain, created by Valar Group and Project Tachyon. Unlike the previous governance system, the new mechanism enables shielded wallet holders to participate without revealing their identities while protecting their funds throughout the process.

However, the outcome will only be recognized if at least 1 million ZEC takes part in the vote. That participation threshold makes community involvement a central requirement for validating the final decisions and strengthening future governance across the network.

Eligible participants must hold spendable shielded ZEC in Ironwood before the blockchain snapshot scheduled for Aug. 24 at 19:00 UTC. Once the snapshot is complete, holders may transfer their funds without affecting their voting eligibility before polls close on Sept. 12.

Coinholders to decide key technical and economic proposals

The NU7 ballot includes several proposals that could reshape both Zcash’s technical roadmap and token economics. One proposal asks whether the network should replace its traditional halving model with the proposed Network Sustainability Mechanism, which introduces a smoother issuance schedule.

Additionally, voters will determine when transaction fee reissuance should begin across the network. Another proposal recommends retiring the legacy Sprout transaction format, ending support for one of Zcash’s oldest transaction systems.

Coinholders will also decide whether block production should accelerate from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Moreover, the community will vote on how the development team should proceed if some NU7 features are not completed before the planned release schedule.

The voting infrastructure relies on a distributed election authority consisting of at least 10 validators. Furthermore, vote tallies become accessible only after approval from two-thirds of the validator set, adding another layer of security while preserving voter privacy.

Meanwhile, ZEC has shown stronger technical positioning before the governance event. The cryptocurrency trades above its 20-day, 50-day and 100-day moving averages. Additionally, the 200-day moving average remains below current price action and continues trending upward.

ZEC has also reclaimed the $500 price level and continues consolidating above nearby support. Besides that, its Relative Strength Index stands near 54, reflecting balanced market momentum rather than excessive buying activity.

Conclusion

The upcoming NU7 vote places several long-term protocol decisions directly in the hands of Zcash coinholders. Meeting the 1 million ZEC participation requirement would reinforce the network’s governance model while determining how the protocol evolves through its next major upgrade.
