Aurora Mainnet Outage Update: Price Drop and User Impact, What’s Next?

Aurora mainnet stopped producing blocks at 02:16:11 UTC on July 20, 2026, and the network remains unavailable. The halt was first flagged by on-chain monitoring account Onchain Lens, and it comes at a rough time for a chain whose total value locked has already dropped 99% from its 2022 peak.

Aurora Mainnet Outage

As of publication time, Aurora Labs has not issued an official incident report.

Aurora is an EVM-compatible chain built on NEAR Protocol, and this outage puts fresh attention on a project that has struggled for years to keep users and liquidity.

Aurora Mainnet Outage Update: Onchain Lens Report

Onchain Lens posted the first alert at roughly 02:16:11 UTC, noting that the blockchain had stopped processing new transactions. Major news aggregators then shared WuBlockchain shared the block explorer and DefiLlama pictures that confirmed the network stayed unavailable.

Aurora mainnet down news has now gained strong traction among the community over security concerns and exploits fears.

  • Root Cause: Under Investigation

Aurora Labs: The NEAR Protocol EVM Chain, and $12M Funding History

Aurora launched in 2021 as an EVM-compatible chain running on NEAR Protocol. The goal was simple: let Ethereum developers deploy smart contracts on a faster, cheaper network while using NEAR's sharded design underneath.

The project raised $12 million in 2021 from investors such as Pantera Capital, Electric Capital, and Dragonfly Capital. That backing helped $AURORA ride the 2021-2022 DeFi wave, and its total value climbed to about $1.35 billion at the peak, according to DefiLlama.

Aurora Total Value Locked

That growth did not last. Competition from other EVM chains, plus a broader market slowdown, pulled $AURORA's TVL down by 99% to $4.65 million.

The team has since shifted focus toward "Virtual Chains," which are customizable EVM environments built as smart contracts on NEAR, along with cross-chain tools through NEAR Intents.

Aurora Outage Cause: Team Update and User Impact

The exact cause of the mainnet outage has not been confirmed. Explorer data from explorer.aurora.dev showed network utilization near 0.00%, with the newest blocks sitting around 29 minutes old at last check.

The official team has not released a public statement on the outage as of this writing. Their recent posts focused on wallet features and ecosystem partnerships rather than any infrastructure notice.

No official post-mortem has appeared on Discord or the project blog either.

User impact looks limited given how small the platform's daily activity already was. Still, a few groups feel it more than others:

  • Users with assets bridged to Aurora may not be able to move funds out right now

  • Rainbow Bridge transfers touching the chain could face delays

  • Developers running dApps on the network cannot process new transactions during the halt

  • No evidence points to a hack or funds at risk; this looks like an availability issue, not a security breach

Aurora Token Price Today: Token Drop On Aurora Mainnet Outage News

The $AURORA token price today sits near $0.0185, down 1.68%, reflecting the mainnet down update impact. Trading volume also fell 27.9% to $422K. Market cap sits at $13.39 million, with $18.55  million FDV.

As per current data, the network shrunken footprint compared to its 2022 highs, where it has $32.45 per token price and a $1.35 billion TVL.

As for today’s context, an extended outage does not directly touch on-chain holdings, but prolonged downtime can weigh on sentiment for a token already trading at a small market cap.

What Could Be Behind This Aurora Mainnet Outage, Based on Precedent

No official cause has been confirmed yet, but a few technical explanations have come up in discussions among developers and monitoring accounts. One points to a possible issue with the Aurora-specific bridge or relay that connects the chain to NEAR validators.

A second points to a failure in a sidecar service that Aurora's EVM layer depends on to process blocks. A third raises the chance of a broader NEAR-related consensus hiccup that only affected the platform's layer and left the main NEAR chain untouched.

None of these explanations has been confirmed by the official team, and nothing so far points to an exploit or funds at risk. Similar EVM sidechains have faced comparable relay or validator issues in the past, and most got resolved through a restart rather than a deeper fix.

What Comes Next for the Aurora Network After This Mainnet Outage

Past outages on smaller chains typically get resolved within hours through validator restarts or relay fixes, followed by a public explanation once service returns.

Aurora's longer path forward depends less on general EVM competition and more on whether Virtual Chains and NEAR Intents attract new developers and liquidity. This outage is unlikely to end the project on its own, but it adds to a pattern of shrinking relevance that $AURORA will need to reverse if it wants a larger role in the NEAR ecosystem going forward.
