A Kraken customer has lost 8,662 ETH, valued at about $18.19 million, in a suspected social engineering attack. On-chain data shared Tuesday by analyst EmberCN shows the attacker began moving funds roughly one hour before the activity was flagged.
The compromised wallet had received consistent inflows from a Kraken hot wallet over the past month. These transfers, spread across multiple batches, suggest the user had been actively withdrawing funds before the incident.
That pattern changed abruptly when large, unusual transactions appeared on-chain. One transfer of 878 ETH, worth about $1.78 million, was routed through THORChain and converted into 26.573 BTC.
Rapid Cross-Chain Movement Raises Alarm
The converted Bitcoin was then sent to another address within minutes, completing a rapid cross-chain movement. Blockchain data indicates the swap transaction was executed at block 25,569,812, with the BTC leg confirmed shortly after.
The speed of the transaction highlights how quickly attackers can move funds once access is obtained. Observers noted that the full cross-chain transfer took less than an hour, limiting the chances of intervention.
Social engineering remains a major threat in crypto, as attackers rely on deception rather than code vulnerabilities. Victims are often tricked into signing malicious transactions or revealing sensitive wallet details through phishing or fake support channels.
Security Risks and Ongoing Monitoring
Unlike smart contract exploits, social engineering attacks target human behavior and can bypass standard security protections. Once access is granted, attackers can drain wallets and obscure fund trails using cross-chain swaps.
Kraken has not released an official statement regarding the incident at the time of writing. However, wallet activity suggests the victim may have been targeted during routine transactions or withdrawals.
The attacker’s Bitcoin address is now being tracked by the community for further movement. While the full amount of stolen ETH has not yet been fully converted, the initial swap indicates an effort to complicate tracing.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about user-level security in crypto markets. Security experts continue to advise users to verify communications, avoid unknown links, and use hardware wallets for storing large balances.
