Man Admits Guilt in $6M Crypto.com Refund Mishap

NAIROBI (CoinChapter.com) – Crypto.com mistakenly refunded $6.8 million to a customer instead of the intended $65. Jatinder Singh, the recipient of the windfall, later pled guilty to stealing $4.42 million of these funds. The incident happened in May 2021 when Singh attempted to deposit $65 into his Crypto.com account using his partner’s bank details. A name mismatch caused the transaction to fail, prompting the platform to issue the erroneous refund.

Lavish Lifestyle Funded by Crypto.com’s Costly Error

After discovering the erroneous transaction, Singh advised Manivel to withdraw the funds to prevent a reversal, claiming they believed they had won a raffle. Despite suspecting a scam, Manivel transferred $2.6 million to her Malaysian bank account.

The couple used part of the funds to purchase a $1.35 million property in Craigieburn. They also acquired two additional homes and two land blocks in Melbourne.

An internal audit uncovered the mistake seven months later, by which time they had spent most of the money, making recovery difficult.

Crypto.com attempted to reclaim the funds by contacting the Commonwealth Bank, which forwarded the request to Manivel.

Legal Battles and Financial Consequences: What Happens Next?

In court, Singh’s barrister, Martin Kozlowski, argued that Singh misunderstood the seriousness of his actions, believing the funds belonged to him. He requested leniency, suggesting Singh’s nearly year-long remand be considered and advocating for a community corrections order instead of jail time.

Prosecutor Campbell Thomson opposed this, describing Singh’s actions as opportunistic and calling for imprisonment despite acknowledging his detention.

Judge Martine Marich noted Singh’s lack of criminal intent, comparing the situation to a “bag of gold falling from the sky.” Sentencing is expected later this month.

Manivel, Singh’s former partner, received a 209-day sentence, counted as time served, and an 18-month community corrections order for recklessly dealing with crime proceeds. The court learned that Crypto.com pursued legal action to recover the funds, but $4 million in Malaysia remains unreturned.

Crypto.com Battles Repeated Refund Errors

This incident isn’t the first time Crypto.com has mistakenly sent large sums. In Aug. 2022, the company accidentally sent $10.5 million to a Melbourne woman. She owed only $100. She and her sister used the funds to buy a luxury home. This led to a court battle, highlighting operational issues within the exchange.
