Something shifted in institutional crypto appetite this week. It wasn’t subtle. Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs together pulled in $2.6 billion, the strongest combined performance since October 2025.
What Followed Treasury Secretary’s Announcement
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on August 19 that the U.S. government would at least double its long-dated bond buyback operations from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation, effective September 9.
Long-dated yields fell. The dollar weakened. Bitcoin moved almost immediately. Roughly $1.5 billion in short positions were liquidated that same day, with around $700 million clearing in a single minute.
That forced short-covering accelerated a move that was already building beneath the surface.
Bitcoin ETFs: Five Days, $1.9 Billion
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs logged five consecutive days of net inflows from August 17 through August 21, according to SoSoValue data.
The daily breakdown ran $297.56 million on August 17, $189.30 million on August 18, $517.19 million on August 19, $606.29 million on August 20, and $307.45 million on August 21.

That $606 million on August 20 was Bitcoin ETFs’ single best day since May 1. BlackRock’s IBIT led throughout, pulling in $284.7 million on August 19 alone.
Weekly trading volume across Bitcoin funds reached $22.15 billion, roughly triple the prior week’s total.
Techgaged had flagged how sharply the mood had turned before this, covering Bitcoin ETFs’ darkest week yet in June, when spot funds posted their worst outflow performance since launch.
Ethereum ETFs: A Quiet Record Of Its Own
Ether ETFs added $697.2 million for the week, their largest weekly total of 2026.
The daily pattern mirrored Bitcoin’s surge: $30.85 million on August 17, $71.47 million on August 18, $189.15 million on August 19, $221 million on August 20, and $184.93 million on August 21.

BlackRock’s ETHA led Friday’s session with $151 million, pushing its cumulative total to $12.17 billion since launch.
Grayscale’s Ethereum Mini Trust added $11.51 million on the same day, lifting its own cumulative net inflows to $1.85 billion.
Total net assets across ETH ETFs ended the week at $14.29 billion, representing 4.85% of Ethereum’s total market value.
Techgaged covered the institutional appetite building under Ethereum months earlier, reporting how institutions had been accumulating through weakness even as retail stepped back.
One Number Still Worth Watching
Despite the best week of 2026, both products remain negative year-to-date. Bitcoin ETFs are down roughly $2.9 billion in cumulative net flows for 2026, while Ethereum ETFs are down about $191.8 million.
As of August 23, 2026 (08:00 UTC), Bitcoin trades at $77,028.94 and ETH at $2,413.55.
Watch whether Bitcoin ETF cumulative net inflows reclaim the $62.77 billion October 2025 peak.
