tl;dr: talking about crypto IRL? 1. Why not: it backfires 1. How not: change topics
PD: pro-tip mention China banning crypto, and slide to WW3.
Why you should not talk about crypto
It backfires, at several levels:
- Some people will get into crypto, but they are not ready. They will buy high and sell low, be left as bagholders of failed projects, scammed, hacked, lose their keys,... Crypto has a lot of potential, but so far it is not ready for the mainstream public.
They are likely to lose money, have a bad experience, and hate crypto (and you) as a result. They should hate you, if you talked them into something that is not good for them. If you know the person you are talking with, decide based on that. Otherwise, avoid talking about crypto. - Some people already had a bad experience, or have other reasons or excuses to hate crypto, and you as a result. Let them talk, and decide if their ideas and thinking are a problem for you or not.
In general, do not try to change people's minds with words. It only works exceptionally, and most of the time it backfires. Again, YMMV, decide based on your knowledge about that person.

How to avoid talking about crypto
- Do not evangelize. Do not bring the topic up in the conversation. When someone else does, consider the next step.
- Change the topic, subtly. You may use anything in your environment if it happens to be interesting, but do not try desperately. Instead, it is better to mold the topic of the conversation rather than trying to swap it with something else.
- So how to change it? Bring additional ideas to the same topic: inflation, the top 0.1% owning Wall Street, the concentration of wealth, how company profits increase while worker's wages do not, etc.
- Crypto may be a solution or help with the previous problems, or it may not. That does not matter. Those problems are the real issues people should be worried about. At least in my opinion, if you have a different opinion, choose different topics. Whatever topic you choose, morph gradually the original topic by connecting ideas, issues, and things to discuss. China is an easy ace to keep up your sleeve.
- In general (with few exceptions) avoid asking questions. Questions will lead to simple answers as realistic as voting for Gandalf to have better wealth redistribution, and back to crypto as a tax evasion mechanism. (Funny that it is both worthless and its profits result in tax evasion, what is the tax rate on worthless profits?)
- If everything else fails, nod and drink.
It takes knowing the people you are talking with, and a lot of practice. I cannot do the practice for you, but I hope this helps.
