K Wave Media (KWM) Soars Over 120% Following Announcement of BTC Acquisition Plan

K Wave Media, a K-pop entertainment company, saw its stock, KWM, surge by over 120% on Wednesday following news of its new bitcoin initiative. The firm announced that it had secured an equity financing agreement worth up to $500 million, which will support its long-term BTC treasury strategy.

According to the firm, a significant portion of the funds will be allocated to buying and holding bitcoin. The move positions K Wave Media among the earliest publicly listed media companies to integrate crypto into its financial operations.

In addition to holding bitcoin, the company plans to operate nodes on the Bitcoin Lightning Network. It also intends to back Bitcoin-native infrastructure to unlock decentralized rewards and strengthen its overall treasury performance.

K Wave Media Embraces Bitcoin to Drive Innovation

K Wave Media’s shift comes amid a broader wave of institutional interest in BTC this year. In its announcement, the company pointed to Japan’s Metaplanet, which reportedly saw a 4,000% surge in stock value in 2024 after adopting the premier cryptocurrency as a reserve asset.

The firm plans to align this financial strategy with its core entertainment business. It aims to integrate Bitcoin into areas such as K-pop merchandise, fan engagement, and Web3-based content delivery. This hybrid model reflects a growing trend among media companies that are exploring blockchain as a tool for innovation and audience engagement.

“By embedding BTC into our core strategy, we’re reinforcing our commitment to decentralization, agility, and future-facing value creation,” co-interim CEO Ted Kim said.

Bitcoin Adoption Gains Momentum

Founded in 2023 and based in the Cayman Islands, K Wave Media focuses on producing K-pop-related content and merchandise for a global fan base. Its offerings span both traditional media and digital platforms, reflecting the industry’s growing international appeal.

With its latest Bitcoin initiative, K Wave Media joins many companies adopting cryptocurrency as part of their financial strategy. More than 20 firms worldwide now hold at least $5 million worth of Bitcoin, underscoring the momentum behind corporate adoption.

Notably, this trend has been primarily driven by Strategy, whose aggressive Bitcoin strategy has set a benchmark for others. The company began acquiring Bitcoin in 2021, led by Michael Saylor, and has since amassed a treasury exceeding $60 billion.
