MTV Video Music Awards, the biggest annual music video competition, has introduced the inaugural edition of the Best Metaverse Performance Award. Blackpink, the South Korean Pop girl band, have surprised the audience with a magnificent performance not on stage, but inside the PUBG Mobile game.
Gigs in the Metaverse Are Becoming A Trend
Despite delivering the first-ever award for the Best Metaverse Performance, MTV is not the first one with the idea to set up a gig in the metaverse. Previously, well-known rapper Travis Scott has performed in Fortnite. The Sci-Fi style and super realistic graphics has left many Hip Hop fans pleasantly surprised.
Ariana Grande Fans Are Wiping Their Tears
Moreover, the first-ever Best Metaverse Performance award by MTV has seen some serious competition. The Korean Pop girl band had to take the throne from Ariana Grande, even though many of her fans don’t see it as fair. Ariana Grande performed in Fortnite, while other competitors include Justin Bieber for his Wave performance, Twenty-One Pilots in Roblox and BTS in Minecraft. While the last two cannot compete in quality of the visuals of either Fortnite and PUBG, the backlash from fans of Ariana Grande’s loss makes some sense.
However, the fans decided, as Blackpink received over 320 votes worldwide. Check out their performance below:
The Best Metaverse Performance Award is the first of its kind, marking the growing adoption of metaverse in Pop culture.
