What is a Red Kite?

A Red Kite is a species of bird of prey with reddish-brown plumage and long, forked tails. They are found throughout much of Europe, parts of Asia, and the Middle East. Red Kites are scavengers that feed on carrion, small mammals, insects, and other birds. They often soar in the air in search of food or to survey their territory. They have also been known to steal food from other animals or humans.

Red Kites are large birds measuring up to 25 inches in length with a wingspan of around five feet. Their distinctive red-brown feathers give them their name. The underside is usually lighter than the upperparts and they have yellow legs and beaks. In flight they can be identified by their slow flapping wing beats and long glides.

The Red Kite was once common across much of Europe but has suffered severe declines due to persecution and habitat loss over the centuries. It is now listed as an endangered species in many countries including Britain where it was reintroduced in 1989 after becoming extinct there more than 100 years ago.

In recent years conservation efforts have helped boost numbers across Europe with some success but the future of this beautiful bird remains uncertain.
