Summary

  • MoneyGram launched a Stellar-powered virtual Visa card in Colombia, allowing verified customers to spend USDC through participating merchants nationwide directly.
  • Stellar processes blockchain transfers, while Crossmint supplies wallet custody and Rain connects stablecoin balances with Visa’s established global payment network.
  • MoneyGram plans physical cards, regional expansion, and MGUSD support, although stablecoin balances remain excluded from government deposit insurance protection programs.

MoneyGram has entered the stablecoin debit card market with a virtual Visa card built on the Stellar blockchain. According to the announcement, the pilot gives Colombian consumers a way to spend digital dollars through MoneyGram’s partnerships with Rain and Crossmint.

Users can access the card inside the MoneyGram application once they complete identity verification. They can link it to Apple Pay or Google Wallet for contactless payments. Consequently, remittance recipients can spend digital funds without converting their balances through a separate cash withdrawal.

Colombia provides a launch market because remittances support many households across Latin America. Consumers facing inflation may value access to dollar-denominated assets. However, the service introduces cryptocurrency custody and issuer risks that differ from traditional bank accounts.

Stellar Rails Connect USDC With Everyday Payments

Cardholders maintain their balances in USDC until they make purchases through the Visa network. During checkout, the system converts the required stablecoins into Colombian pesos for settlement. Merchants therefore receive local currency without handling cryptocurrency or changing their established payment infrastructure.

Stellar supports the blockchain transactions, while Crossmint provides the wallet custody system. Additionally, Rain supplies the card issuance and stablecoin payment technology connecting balances with Visa. This arrangement places blockchain processing behind a familiar payment experience for consumers and retailers.

MoneyGram plans to add MGUSD, its Stellar-issued stablecoin, as another supported funding option. The addition could integrate the company’s currency plans more closely with its international money transfer services. Moreover, recipients could move from receiving remittances to spending them within one platform.

Physical cards are expected before the end of 2026 and will support local currency withdrawals through ATMs. MoneyGram also plans to expand the service into Latin American markets based on the Colombian pilot. Regional expansion could show whether stablecoin cards reduce barriers between receiving cross-border payments and covering household expenses.

Nevertheless, stablecoin balances are not bank deposits and receive no protection from government deposit insurance programs. Customers therefore remain exposed to potential custody, technology, and stablecoin issuer failures. MoneyGram’s project combines wider payment access with financial risks that users must understand before maintaining substantial balances.
