NFTs are no longer just a global craze. As we head into 2022, two companies are teaming up to jettison the first-ever batch of NFTs created off-world, back down to Earth.
The First Space Sunrise 2022 NFTs are the result of a collaboration between GameFi company Digital Entertainment Asset and the design firm Bascule, featuring real-time photos of the sunrise shot from the International Space Station at the very moment we enter the new year.
The limited-edition NFTs are being created in partnership with The Space Frontier Studio Kibo (Hope), which since September 2021 has broadcast an interactive live stream from the ISS, as part of the J-SPARC project - a joint initiative with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.
DEA said the collaboration marks the dawn of a new era in the NFT space, with the first images of the year taken from 400 kilometers above the Earth. It will also be the first-ever collection of NFTs published in outer space.
Two separate collections are planned, "The First Space Sunrise 2022" and "Astro-Dogu 2022", with exactly 2,022 images in each. At the exact moment we enter the new year, 00:00 UTC/GMT, 1 January 2022, the ISS will begin capturing a series of photos every three seconds as it continues its orbit around the world at a breakneck speed of 8 km per second. Each image will be stamped with the precise longitude and latitude of the ISS at the moment it's generated and dropped in real-time where it will be up for grabs on the official The First Space Sunrise 2022 website.
"The narrative is one of the most important factors for a collectible NFT," said DEA Chief Science Officer Kozo Yamada. "I believe NFTs will grow in global importance in 2022. With this NFT, collectors will get to witness a 'non-fungible' moment together by collecting the first images of the year from space."
The First Space Sunrise 2022 NFTs, a clear image of the sunrise shot from ISS, will be sold for 0.2022 ETH to the first bidders on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Astro-Dogu 2022 series NFT will blend the creativity of The Space Frontier Studio Kibo (Hope) with the ISS's live images, overlaying each one with a randomized DOGU, which is the Kibo space station's unique humanized astro-mascot. The Space Frontier Studio Kibo (Hope) said the NFTs are meant to reflect its belief that everyone on Earth is free to express themselves, regardless of their age, gender, nationality or race. The Astro-Dogu 2022 NFTs will sell for 1,011 ETH, also on a first-come, first-served basis.
The space NFTs will fund a good cause too, with 20.22% of the proceeds from the sale to be donated to the International Astronomical Project, which intends to purchase a next-generation ultra-large telescope that will be used to support space development projects around the world.
Bascule Representative Director Masayoshi Boku said the project aims to bring humanity closer to a future where people from anywhere in the world can participate in live space events. He said he envisions a future in which human solidarity transcends nations and cultures.
"Holders of The First Space Sunrise 2022 NFTs have more than just a token, they are part of a crew of friends who share the same vision," he promised.
