Save the Children was the world’s first INGO (international non-governmental organizations) to accept a bitcoin donation since 2013: a donation on Bitcoin Black Friday via the BitGive Foundation in response to Typhoon Haiyan that struck Southeast Asia and devastated the Philippines.

What is Bitcoin Black Friday? Bitcoin Black Friday is a day dedicated to showcasing the Bitcoin marketplace where merchants and causes alike promote BTC adoption to both users and merchants, consumers, retailers and causes. Save the Children was the first nonprofit beneficiary for Bitcoin Black Friday in 2013 through the BitGive Foundation.

What is #BitcoinTuesday? BitcoinTuesday (Giving Tuesday for cryptocurrencies) is the biggest day for giving cryptocurrency to charity organized by The Giving Block. Save the Children is one of the many nonprofits around the world participating, opening their doors to this new class of donors looking to make a difference during the holidays. What is a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) and does Save the Children accept NFT donations? NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. NFT is a smart contract typically built on the Ethereum blockchain, a decentralized ledger where public transactions are stored. An NFT is like a digital certificate of authenticity that serves as proof of ownership. Supporters can donate the proceeds from the sale of an NFT to Save the Children through our cryptocurrency donation page if donors convert it to one of the cryptocurrencies that we accept such as ETH. Is my cryptocurrency holiday charitable donation tax deductible? Yes, your cryptocurrency donation is tax deductible!* Save the Children offers supporters who want to donate cryptocurrency to charity the ability to give in a tax-efficient way. The IRS classifies cryptocurrency donations as property, meaning they are not subject to capital gains tax and are tax-deductible. Your contribution is tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. For example, for donors in the United States, the IRS has classified bitcoin as property for tax purposes. This means that when someone donates bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit like Save the Children, donors do not have to pay capital gains tax and it is tax-deductible if you provide your email address. *Please consult your tax advisor. You can donate anonymously but you will not receive a tax receipt unless you provide at least your email address.
