In Brief:

  • Mastercard will sponsor the XRPL Hackathon, where developers will build applications across four blockchain finance tracks during the 36-hour competition.
  • Ripple and Mastercard have expanded their relationship through RLUSD settlement, XRP rewards, CBDC programs, and institutional partnerships.
  • A May pilot involving Ripple, Mastercard, JPMorgan, and Ondo used XRPL to redeem a tokenized US Treasury fund.

Global payments company Mastercard has joined the upcoming XRP Ledger Hackathon in New York as an official sponsor. The 36-hour event will run from October 24 through October 25, bringing developers together before Ripple’s Swell conference.

Participants will build and launch projects using the XRP Ledger while exploring practical applications across several financial sectors. Organizers have divided the competition into four tracks, including protocol innovation, agentic finance, lending, and borrowing.

Additionally, teams with existing products can compete by adding XRP Ledger functionality to their established applications. This structure allows developers to create new platforms or connect working products with XRPL’s payment and tokenization infrastructure.

Mastercard’s participation brings a major traditional payments company into an event focused on expanding the XRP Ledger developer ecosystem. However, organizers have not disclosed the available prizes, participating judges, or detailed technical requirements for each track.

The hackathon will take place shortly before Swell, Ripple’s flagship conference for blockchain companies and financial institutions. Consequently, participating teams could present their projects to developers, investors, and businesses already exploring Ripple’s technology.

Mastercard Expands Its Work With Ripple and the XRP Ledger

Mastercard has developed several connections with Ripple through stablecoin settlement, consumer rewards, and institutional blockchain experiments. In November 2025, Ripple announced a collaboration with Mastercard, WebBank, and Gemini involving the RLUSD stablecoin.

Gemini had previously introduced an XRP edition of its Mastercard credit card during August 2025. The card allows eligible customers to earn cryptocurrency rewards, including as much as 4% back in XRP.

Moreover, Mastercard expanded its blockchain settlement plans in June 2026 by supporting several regulated stablecoins across its network. The company included Ripple’s RLUSD among those assets and listed the XRP Ledger as a supported blockchain network.

Therefore, its hackathon sponsorship extends a relationship already connected to payments and regulated digital asset settlement. Ripple and Mastercard also share an earlier history involving central bank digital currencies and institutional tokenization projects.

Mastercard selected Ripple as an initial participant in its CBDC Partner Program in 2023. Both companies later participated in experiments designed to connect tokenized assets with established financial infrastructure.

Tokenization Pilot Demonstrated XRPL’s Institutional Settlement Role

In May, Mastercard joined Ripple, JPMorgan, and Ondo Finance in a cross-border redemption pilot using the XRP Ledger. That pilot completed the redemption of Ondo’s tokenized United States Treasury fund through blockchain-based settlement infrastructure.

Significantly, the test demonstrated XRPL’s potential role in linking tokenized securities with conventional banking and payment systems. Ripple also joined Mastercard’s Crypto Partner Program, creating another formal connection between the two companies.

Through the New York hackathon, Mastercard can observe projects covering autonomous finance, decentralized lending, and protocol development. Meanwhile, Ripple gains support from a global payments company before bringing its institutional community together at Swell.  Mastercard’s sponsorship broadens a collaboration covering RLUSD settlement, XRP rewards, tokenized assets, and developer-focused blockchain innovation.
