Zcash and Monero Rise amid Financial Surveillance Concerns: Is It Too Late to Buy Privacy Coins?
Privacy-focused cryptocurrencies defied the latest cryptocurrency bear market. Some even came close to surpassing their previous all-time highs while the broader market bled billions of dollars.
Investors poured millions of dollars into privacy-preserving tokens as global regulatory agencies are developing stricter financial surveillance measures for both fiat money and cryptocurrencies.
Smart money is waking up to the threat of financial monitoring, exiting into privacy coins like Zcash and Monero to preserve their intrinsic right to financial privacy.
The result could be a generational opportunity for crypto investors, as asset managers predict up to 10% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization flowing into privacy-centric cryptocurrencies.
Is it too late to buy into the privacy sector? Only the future will tell, but this CoinStats article will give you all the most reliable fundamental and institutional signals to drive your decision.
Privacy tokens surge following global privacy crackdown, growing financial monitoring
The top privacy-preserving cryptocurrencies have drastically outperformed Bitcoin so far in 2026. Year-to-date, Zcash is up 145%, and Monero is up 47%, while Bitcoin fell by 11%.
Privacy coins didn’t outperform the broader market by coincidence. Multiple structural tailwinds are driving investor demand for privacy tokens on both the regulatory and cybersecurity fronts.

For one, banks and institutions worldwide are increasing financial surveillance and transaction monitoring efforts due to regulatory pressure. This also includes stricter monitoring for cryptocurrency transactions and even cash payments.
Cash and bank transfers are seeing growing guardrails, including in Europe, where the parliament adopted an EU-wide limit on cash payments exceeding €10,000, set to come into effect on July 10, 2027.
The U.S. government has also increased its surveillance efforts, requiring banks to report all cash transactions exceeding $10,000, along with all relevant customer information. Not to mention that authorities can seize civil assets without a criminal conviction.
Lastly, AI development is exposing more cybersecurity vulnerabilities, increasing the number of hacks and data breaches for both traditional financial institutions and crypto protocols. One of the largest US crypto exchanges, Coinbase, recently suffered a data breach through its analytics provider that exposed the data of some users.
These concerns drove renewed demand for privacy coins, including from institutional players that are now betting on their growth.
Institutions are betting on privacy coins and launching funds
Some of crypto’s biggest institutional backers are betting on privacy coins.
Crypto ETP issuer 21Shares and asset manager Grayscale both highlighted the privacy token sector among their preferred crypto investment themes for 2026. The asset manager’s privacy recommendations named some of the sector’s largest tokens, including ZEC, AZTEC and RAIL.
Digital Currency Group (DCG) founder Barry Silbert also predicted that 5% to 10% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization will flow into privacy-preserving cryptocurrencies within the next few years.
Asset managers and even public companies are adding privacy-focused coins to their balance sheets. Nasdaq-listed Cypherpunk Technologies made Zcash part of its treasury strategy and holds 326,418 ZEC tokens, accounting for 1.9% of its circulating supply.
Other notable ZEC holders include Grayscale, DCG, Nasdaq-listed Ezra (formerly Reliance Global Group), and Winklevoss Capital.
Zcash to capture Bitcoin’s market share with $4,000 target in sight: Grayscale
Zcash may even start challenging Bitcoin’s dominance in the crypto market due to its financial privacy features, according to one of the biggest crypto hedge funds, Grayscale.
“The price of Zcash (ZEC) is already up ~19x over the last year, but it is still valued at less than 1% of Bitcoin’s market cap,” argued Grayscale in an August research note, adding:
“Zcash offers financial privacy and other attributes that users may find essential in an age of AI. We think it is still undervalued and can continue to capture market share.”
Zcash would rise to $4,054 if it captured a 5% share of Bitcoin’s market capitalization and to $8,109 if it captured 10%, according to Grayscale’s model.

It’s not too late to buy into privacy coins
It’s not too late to profit from the rise of privacy-centric cryptocurrencies. Privacy in itself is among the foundational values that gave rise to Bitcoin. Coins like Zcash and Monero arose as a further iteration to offer fully shielded anonymous transactions.
Privacy coins are capturing more investor mindshare amid surveillance efforts and data breaches. It’s visible in their usage too. On Zcash, shielded transactions have trended up for most of 2026, signaling greater appetite for financial anonymity.
But beyond these fundamental drivers, more privacy coins are starting to appear in exchange-traded fund (ETF) filings. The U.S. already saw the debut of the first Zcash ETF, which generated over $227 million in inflows to date, according to SosoValue.
Historical chart patterns also signal the beginning of the next cryptocurrency bull market, which will provide an additional tailwind effect for the privacy sector.
