In response to criticisms regarding the growing institutionalization of the crypto sector, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, reaffirms the continued presence of original ideals. In a recent exchange, he highlights significant advancements in projects with social and decentralizing aims.

During an exchange with Joe Weisenthal, co-host of the Bloomberg Odd Lots podcast, Vitalik Buterin reaffirmed the active presence of “idealistic hippies” and their innovative projects, despite the changes in the crypto sector.

“We are still here!“, he declared, referencing the pioneers who saw blockchain as a powerful tool for democratization and opening up the Internet. Buterin categorically refuted the idea of abandoning the founding values of the crypto movement.

Although media attention has shifted towards financial and institutional aspects, the co-founder of Ethereum highlighted concrete advancements made in crucial areas. 

He notably cited decentralized social networks Farcaster and Lens, progress in secure electronic voting, and new approaches to crowdfunding like quadratic funding.

Social innovations rooted in blockchain technology

Buterin highlights several flagship projects embodying this persistent social vision. Quadratic funding stands out as a more equitable model of community support, while privacy-preserving payment solutions address growing concerns about data protection.

The concept of “retroactive funding” is also emphasized by Buterin. This innovative approach, aimed at rewarding contributors to digital public goods, could radically transform support for open-source developers and content creators.
