Sui Says Mainnet Experiment Reached 6M TPS With Offchain Tunnels

Sui said a July 4 livestream experiment peaked at 6,086,766 transactions per second, after AI agents and users generated activity across games, payments and chat through programmable tunnels.

The test cleared Sui’s 1 million TPS target by more than six times and beat its prior controlled benchmark of 297,000 TPS, based on figures published by the Sui Foundation. Participants used an event explorer, signed in through zkLogin, received a test token called MTPS and interacted with AI agents without needing SUI for gas.

The activity did not run as ordinary base-layer transaction flow. Sui’s programmable tunnels are offchain payment and state channels that settle to Sui mainnet when closed, letting users and agents transact gaslessly before the final channel state is committed back onchain.

Closed channels were mutually cosigned and independently verifiable onchain. That made the experiment a stress test of Sui’s channel architecture, not a direct measure of how many standard transactions validators processed every second under normal application demand.

Throughput Claim Lands After Reliability Scrutiny

The performance claim gives Sui a sharp marketing number during a period when the network has also faced reliability questions. Recent Sui mainnet stalls kept uptime and operational resilience in focus even as the project continued to pitch speed as a core advantage.

The programmable-tunnel design changes how the TPS figure should be read. Most user activity stayed offchain until settlement, which makes comparisons with base-layer TPS on Solana, Ethereum or ICP less direct. The figure still shows how Sui wants to scale high-frequency activity such as agent payments, games and prediction-market style interactions without forcing every move through the base chain.

Mysten Labs co-founder and chief cryptographer Kostas Chalkias framed the test around agent-to-agent commerce, competitive gaming and gasless high-volume interactions. Sui Foundation said Mysten Labs and the Sui hacker team plan to keep building tunnel features, including confidential transfers, multi-party tunnels and agent-to-agent prediction markets.

Daily Usage Trails Stress-Test Scale

Sui’s live economic activity remains much smaller than the experiment’s headline throughput. DeFiLlama listed Sui chain revenue at about $1,320 over 24 hours, with $5,196 in chain fees, $38.78 million in DEX volume and 14.4 million transactions during the same period.

The dashboard also showed SUI near a $3 billion market capitalization and about $7.4 billion in fully diluted valuation. That leaves the stress-test result tied to capacity and channel design rather than sustained revenue demand.

Sui’s DeFi stack has continued expanding below that headline layer. WaterX recently launched a unified-account perps platform on the network, while DeFiLlama listed Sui TVL near $439 million and stablecoin market cap near $461 million.
