A Major Solana Upgrade Targets High-Speed Agent Payments

A major Solana upgrade just went live, and it targets a problem AI agents have struggled with for years.

The Solana Foundation announced Payment Channels on September 3, 2026, technology capable of processing over 1 million payments per second, according to the foundation’s post on

Alibaba Cloud is among the first partners integrating the system through its API endpoints.

The Problem This Actually Solves

Agentic payments have a friction problem. Every call an AI agent makes normally needs its own signature and its own settlement.

That works fine for a single payment. It breaks down fast for an agent making hundreds of metered calls in a loop. Payment Channels fix this by letting a user authorize a spending ceiling once.

Transactions then happen off-chain through signed messages, with settlement occurring only once at the end, similar to running a bar tab rather than paying for every drink separately.

The Numbers Behind the Launch

Solana tested the system by simulating 100,000 wallets transacting in parallel. The test exceeded 1 million payments per second.

That throughput would theoretically support 80 billion payments over 24 hours.

Estimated cost per payment came in around $0.000000000776, though that figure reflects a controlled test rather than live production traffic.

The technology runs through Pay.sh, where Alibaba Cloud’s API endpoints are now payable using this channel structure.

Building on Existing Infrastructure

This isn’t Solana’s first move into agent payments. The network’s x402 protocol, which underpins many of these agentic payment flows, had already processed 200 million transactions totaling $50 billion in volume before this launch.

MoneyGram also went live on Solana in August, offering cash deposit and withdrawal services across more than 170 countries.

Techgaged tracked a related piece of this momentum back in June, noting how Goldman Sachs had been building institutional exposure to Solana even as the network kept shipping new infrastructure.

SOL’s Price Reflects the Momentum

Solana traded at $103.78 on September 4, 2026 (08:00 UTC), up 40.4% over 30 days. The chart shows a steady breakout.

Price held near $70 to $75 through most of early and mid-August, then broke sharply higher starting around August 21.

It climbed past $100 and briefly touched $110 near August 29 before settling back to $103.78.

Techgaged also flagged this same accumulation phase earlier in the year, when spot Solana ETFs kept pulling in inflows well before the token’s price caught up to that demand.

Why This Matters Beyond the Headline Number

The 1 million payments per second figure is a benchmark, not a live production ceiling, so it shouldn’t be treated as Solana’s everyday throughput.

What it does show is real technical progress on a genuine bottleneck.

AI agents making frequent small payments have needed infrastructure like this for a while, and Solana getting there first with a partner the size of Alibaba Cloud gives the network a real head start in a use case that’s likely to grow fast over the next year.
