A Critical Zcash Upgrade Is Coming: Some ZEC Could Become Unspendable

Zcash holders have a deadline coming, and not everyone knows about it yet. The network’s planned NU7 upgrade could leave old ZEC permanently stuck.

Mainnet activation is targeted for November 5. Anyone with funds in the wrong pool needs to move before then.

What NU7 Actually Changes

The official proposal sits on Zcash’s GitHub repository as ZIP 2003. It would disallow version 4 transactions on the network.

That’s the only transaction format that can spend funds from Zcash’s original Sprout shielded pool.

Once that format stops working, Sprout funds effectively freeze in place. The rollout has a clear sequence.

Testnet activation is set for October 6. Zcash plans a final go or no-go decision on October 20. Mainnet activation would follow on November 5, if the testnet run goes cleanly.

A Familiar Pattern of Security-Driven Upgrades

This isn’t the first time Zcash has moved fast to close a risk. Developers rallied behind the Ironwood upgrade earlier this year after a bug in the Orchard shielded pool raised fears of counterfeit ZEC.

That episode showed the network is willing to move decisively when supply integrity is on the line.

NU7 follows the same instinct, just aimed at retiring old, unmaintained code instead of patching a live exploit.

Who This Actually Affects

The Sprout pool holds roughly 22,000 to 25,000 ZEC right now. That’s a small slice of total supply.

The holders at risk are mostly people with wallets from 2016 to 2018, often using old zc-prefixed addresses or long-forgotten wallet.dat files.

Zcash co-founder Zooko Wilcox has personally warned holders to check old wallets before the deadline.

The proposal doesn’t burn the funds outright. But it warns access could be lost for good if coins stay in Sprout past the cutoff.

Price Chart Shows Strength Building Into the Deadline

ZEC traded at $1,484.35 as of 16:01 UTC on September 24, 2026, up 9.7% over seven days, per CoinGecko.

The chart shows a sharp climb to a fresh weekly high above $1,610 on September 23, followed by a pullback to current levels.

Price has held a rising channel all week, printing higher lows even through each dip.

That’s a healthy pattern heading into a deadline that’s drawing fresh attention to the network.

The Clock Is Already Running

Zcash has weathered security scares before, including a sharp selloff after a critical flaw disclosure earlier this year. This time, the network is acting ahead of a problem instead of reacting to one.

With October 6 as the first real checkpoint, the next two weeks should show whether NU7 stays on track for its November 5 target, and whether old Sprout holders actually move in time.
