Stani Kulechov, the founder and CEO of Aave, a decentralized lending protocol, has revealed a costly mistake made by a user that has left the crypto community shocked. The Aave executive noted that the individual lost roughly $600,000 in fees while attempting a swap that ultimately returned only around $50,000 in tokens.

Notably, the incident involved a user attempting to acquire AAVE tokens with $50 million in USDT via the Aave interface. According to Kulechov, the trade was unusually large for just a single order. This attempt triggered an immediate warning from the platform.

$50M Trade Results in Only 324 AAVE Tokens

Interestingly, most efficient and credible crypto platforms include safety alerts when users attempt extremely large transactions that could result in significant price slippage. However, in this case, the Aave interface displayed a warning. In the end, it required the user to confirm they fully grasp the risk before proceeding.

Despite the alert, the user executed the transaction after confirming the warning on their mobile device by checking the required confirmation box.

While the incident was thought to have been caused by slippage, the Aave CEO clarified that the user accepted a quote with a high price impact despite warnings. Later, the user received only 324 AAVE tokens ($50,000). Recall that the user initiated a transaction involving $50 million USDT.

According to the latest update, the transaction was processed through CoW swap routers. This technology is tailored to find efficient trading routes across decentralized liquidity sources. Furthermore, Kulechov stated that the routers worked as intended and the integration followed standard and industry practices.

While being a professional trader is crucial, it is important to understand the dangers in disregarding warning alerts. The final outcome highlights how risky it can be to execute large transactions in a single batch.

Aave Offers a Refund to the Affected User

Even though the system functioned correctly, the Aave team expressed sympathy for the user affected by the costly mistake, noting that anyone could have made the same error.

To help reduce the impact, Kulechov said the team plans to return the $600,000 in fees collected from the transaction if they can successfully contact the user. Despite the rising rates of theft and scams in the crypto space, this act of kindness shows how willing people are to help in situations like this.

Following the incident, the Aave team said it will explore additional safeguards to help prevent similar incidents in the future while maintaining the open nature of DeFi systems.
