New Kraken Crypto Options Support BTC and ETH Derivatives

Kraken crypto options are now live on Kraken Pro, giving professional and institutional traders a new way to take positions on Bitcoin and Ethereum beyond simple buying and selling. Kraken launches crypto options that are European-style, meaning they can only be exercised at expiry rather than at any point before, and they settle entirely in cash rather than in the underlying coin.

What's Actually Being Offered

Here's what these new Kraken crypto options actually cover:

  • Pairs and expiries: XBT/USD and ETH/USD, with weekly, monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual expiries available right from launch. This puts Bitcoin trading and Ethereum trading on the same platform as spot and futures, rather than a separate venue.

  • How margin works: Instead of paying a full premium upfront, positions are margined the same way futures contracts are, so losses come out of collateral as the market moves rather than locking up cash immediately.

  • How trades are placed: Access currently runs through a request-for-quote system: a trader submits what they want, receives pricing within seconds, and can accept the best quote to book the trade instantly.

  • Who can trade right now: The contracts are open to qualified international clients located outside Europe, North America, and Australia, with European crypto option availability planned to follow later in 2026.

How Kraken Options Compares to Deribit

Deribit, the largest existing crypto options platform, has historically made portfolio margin an opt-in feature rather than something every account gets automatically, and its default collateral setup has leaned on BTC or ETH alone unless cross-collateral is separately turned on.

Kraken's version skips that extra step, switching portfolio margin on for every eligible client from day one.

What Kraken Pro's Portfolio Margin Engine Means for Users

Here's how the structure works under the hood:

  • Portfolio margin: Turned on automatically for every eligible client, with no separate sign-up step required, and offsetting positions need less collateral than holding each one separately.

  • Collateral flexibility: Traders can post more than 30 different currencies as collateral rather than being locked into US dollars.

  • Unified wallet: Spot, futures, and options all sit inside one wallet.

  • Settlement mechanics: Based on reference prices called BTCOPTRR and ETHOPTRR, calculated as 30-minute averages before 08:00 UTC on the day a contract expires.

  • Fees: Taker fees only apply at that settlement point and are capped at 12.5% of an option's mark price.

Why This Matters for the Broader Market

Options currently make up a small slice of crypto derivatives trading compared to traditional financial markets, where they play a much bigger role. The 2024 arrival of regulated bitcoin ETF options showed there was real professional appetite for exposure structured in a familiar, dollar-settled format, and this launch is built to meet that same demand directly on BTC and ETH.

This options push also fits into a broader pattern of expansion at the Kraken exchange, following its recent $1.5 billion NinjaTrader acquisition aimed at deepening its footprint in regulated derivatives. Wider access is expected to open later in 2026, along with a public order book and support for more assets, which could pull in a broader base of traders currently priced out of niche, crypto-native venues.

Conclusion

This rollout is only the first phase of a longer build-out, not a finished product. The RFQ-only access, the narrow BTC and ETH pairing, and the exclusion of Europe, North America, and Australia for now all point to a company testing demand carefully before opening the doors wider. Whether these Kraken crypto options meaningfully close the gap between crypto and traditional derivatives.

Markets will likely come down to how fast that public order book, broader regional access, and additional assets actually arrive. For now, the launch signals that Kraken sees serious institutional appetite building for exposure structured the way professional traders already understand it, rather than in the more niche formats crypto-native venues have relied on for years.
