Stablecoin News: Tether Earned More, So Why Did the Buffer Shrink?
Today's stablecoin news carries two headlines that don't quite match. Tether reported $1.5 billion in net operating profit for the second quarter of 2026, a jump from $1.04 billion in Q1 — but in the same report, its excess reserve buffer fell to $4.11 billion, down from a record $8.23 billion just three months earlier. Both figures come from Tether's own Q2 attestation, prepared by BDO and published July 31.

Tether's Q2 Numbers at a Glance
Per the attestation, Tether's total assets reached $187.75B as of June 30, against total liabilities of $183.64B, of which $183.62 billion relates directly to issued USDT tokens. USDT issuance grew by approximately $446 million during the quarter to roughly $184.6 billion, pushing USDT's share of the total stablecoin market above 60%, according to Tether. CEO Paolo Ardoino attributed the quarter's resilience to the company's reserve strategy holding up under what he described as real market pressure, noting USDT remained fully backed throughout.
Net operating profit was driven primarily by returns on Tether U.S. Treasury and repurchase agreement holdings, reinforcing the company's position as one of the world's largest institutional buyers of U.S. government debt.
Why the Reserve Buffer Fell by Half
Here's the detail that complicates the "strong quarter" framing: Tether excess reserves — the cushion of assets held above what's needed to back USDT one-to-one — dropped from $8.23B at the end of Q1 to $4.11B at the end of Q2, roughly a 50% decline in three months. Tether's own release doesn't frame this drop directly, focusing instead on the fact that reserves still exceed liabilities. But the scale of the decline is notable regardless of how it's framed.
Part of the explanation lies in asset price movements rather than operational weakness. Gold prices fell roughly 15% during the quarter to just over $4,000 per ounce, and Bitcoin's price used in Tether's reporting dropped from $68,200 to $58,600. Since both assets sit on Tether's balance sheet, price declines directly shrink the reported buffer even when the underlying holdings, measured in ounces or coins, actually grew.
Stablecoin News: Gold, Bitcoin, and What Comes Next
Despite falling gold and Bitcoin prices, Tether expanded both holdings in physical terms. Gold reserves grew by 14 metric tons during the quarter, from roughly 132.2 tons to more than 146.2 tons — though the dollar value of that gold actually fell, from $19.84B to $18.84B , purely due to the price decline. Bitcoin holdings increased by roughly 1,796 coins to 98,933 BTC, while the reported dollar value of that position fell from $6.62 billion to $5.80 billion for the same reason.
Tether also reduced its secured lending exposure by approximately $2.38B, a 15% cut, and said its global user base grew by more than 30 million during the quarter. The company noted that its ongoing Big Four audit process — a full independent audit distinct from the quarterly BDO attestations it has published for years — continued through the period, though it has not yet been completed or published in full.
Conclusion
Today's stablecoin news shows Tether posting its strongest quarterly profit in over a year while simultaneously watching its safety cushion shrink by half — a split that owes more to gold and Bitcoin price declines than to any operational weakness, but is still worth tracking closely as Tether's reserve composition remains tied to assets outside its direct control.
