Bitcoin Surges 5% After U.S. Treasury Buyback Move—Is a September Rally Coming?

Bitcoin had a short burst a few hours ago, surging to its highest level in more than ten weeks. The sharp increase has since sparked massive reactions, and the reason for the surge is no longer a mystery.

As a quick recap, the U.S. Treasury released a statement on Wednesday announcing plans to increase the size of its nominal long-end liquidity support operations starting September 9. The Treasury will increase funding for the operation, which targets 10-20-year and 20-30-year Treasury securities, from the current $2 billion to $4 billion.

Following the release on Wednesday, Bitcoin surged sharply. The 1-hour chart shows that the uptick started around 14:00 UTC and continued into the following hour. During that period, the apex coin rose from $64,966 to a high of $69,749. In total, it gained over 5% within a short period.

The unanswered question is why Bitcoin reacted so strongly. Interestingly, the uptick was not limited to BTC. Other cryptocurrencies also posted notable gains following the news, pushing the global cryptocurrency market up by almost 3%.

Updates from the U.S. Treasury can surprise investors and trigger massive liquidations. Data from CoinGlass estimates that almost $500 million in positions were liquidated.

However, one reason for the market’s reaction was that there was no prior notice of the announcement. In recent times, when insiders have leaked such information beforehand, the market has often priced it in before the official announcement. The Treasury’s move caught most traders by surprise, triggering a buying frenzy.

Away from the initial shock, the message contained in the press release was another reason for the upward momentum.

Bitcoin Could See Massive Liquidity Inflows in the Coming Days

The announcement carried implications for the future. The buyback could be bullish or bearish, depending on one’s perspective. For example, Treasury bond investors may be unhappy with the news because the buybacks could lead to lower yields.

Crypto traders, however, are encouraged by the development, as seen in the market’s reaction a few hours ago. A decline in Treasury yields could increase risk appetite. Bitcoin is considered a high-risk asset and could benefit from an improvement in financial conditions. This may explain the sharp uptick.

Excitement could continue to build as September 9 approaches. Nonetheless, there is growing speculation that the development could help trigger the next Bitcoin rally. While there is a notable chance of an uptrend in September, it is worth noting that Treasury buybacks do not directly address inflation.

As seen in previous instances, when economic data shows an elevated risk of rising consumer prices, the crypto market often retraces.

Summing it up, there is a 60% chance that the apex coin will surge around September 9. However, the rally may not be as strong or prolonged as many expect. Worse still, there is a 40% chance that unfavorable U.S. economic data could overshadow the new initiative, preventing it from having the desired effect.

Away from the fundamentals, the 1-day price chart also offers reasons to expect a pullback over the next 24 hours. One such signal is Bitcoin trading above the Bollinger Bands, which could increase selling pressure following the breakout. The key level to watch is $67,250. If the bulls fail to defend this level, a drop toward $64,000 could follow within the next seven days.
