Active Crypto Developers Plummet 40% Yearly — Where Did the Devs Go?

The number of weekly active developers in the crypto space has declined by nearly 40% over the past year. The decline reflects a shift from sustained, developer-focused innovation to hype-driven initiatives.

Developer Activity Drops

According to data from the crypto analytics platform Artemis Terminal, around 12,380 active developers contributed to open-source repositories during the week of March 17, 2024. By March 16, 2025, that figure had fallen to roughly 7,600, marking a 38.6% decline in weekly participation.

This decline is concerning because developer activity across over 1,500 blockchain ecosystems is a key sign of Web3’s overall health. When developers consistently contribute, it shows that the technology is being improved and maintained, which helps ensure it lasts in the long term.

Developers’ Exit Sparks Industry Concern

The sharp decline has triggered concern across the crypto community, especially on social media, where several industry voices call for a renewed focus on development-led growth. For example, Optimism contributor Binji said the drop signals a major red flag for the space. He described active developers as one of Web3’s “clearest signals of long-term health.”

Binji argued that diminished incentives, shifting attention, and speculation have overshadowed meaningful utility, leaving foundational work unnoticed. He warned that without significant on-chain activity, current distribution models in blockchain ecosystems could lose relevance.

“If nothing meaningful happens on-chain, distribution loses its power. What we need now is not just more developers, we need more SUPPORT for developers,” Binji tweeted.

Echoing this view, developer Ben Ward expressed similar concerns. He argued that venture capital and the market favor projects with rapid product rollouts over those solving real problems. According to him, the only part of crypto with product-market fit is the memecoin-fueled decentralized finance (DeFi) space, which he sees as unsustainable.

Ward stressed that the industry is still far from creating products people genuinely need or desire.

“We’re still far from building things people want to use,” he stated.
