A recent study reveals that all leaders of small and medium-sized enterprises are now aware of cryptocurrencies, and more than one third personally invest in them, despite still limited professional adoption.

French business leaders rush to cryptocurrencies

Leaders of very small and small-medium enterprises are now fully aware of the existence of cryptocurrencies. According to a recent BFM Business and VistaPrint barometer published on February 23rd, 100% of the entrepreneurs surveyed know cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, Ethereum or Solana.

Even more revealing, 39% of them have already invested in these digital assets, with 25% currently maintaining their positions. This trend marks a significant increase compared to early 2023, when only 26% of leaders had taken the plunge.

The financial results of these investments are mostly positive, with 50% of entrepreneurs reporting having made profits. Only 20% recorded losses, while 27% broke even.

Curiosity and the thirst for learning are the main investment motivations, cited by 55% of respondents, closely followed by expected financial returns (52%). Adherence to the technological potential of cryptocurrencies and the desire to diversify their portfolio tie for third place (41%).

Demographic disparities remain pronounced: 40% of leaders aged 18 to 24 actively invest in cryptocurrencies, compared to only 6% of those aged 65 and over. The gender gap is also significant, with 36% of male investors compared to 13% of female investors.

A professional use still timid despite recognized advantages

Despite this enthusiasm for personal investment, only 12% of entrepreneurs have ever used cryptocurrencies for professional transactions, and 3% would not repeat the experience.

Among the 88% who have never crossed this threshold, 41% consider this possibility while 47% categorically exclude it. Paradoxically, 52% of leaders believe it is likely or very likely that many companies will accept these payments within five years.

Entrepreneurs who have integrated crypto assets into their professional activities highlight three major advantages: the speed of transactions (53%), security (49%) and the simplification of international operations (43%).

These advantages contrast with perceived obstacles: the lack of practical knowledge (55%), price volatility (53%), persistent mistrust (49%) and insufficient regulatory framework (38%).

The professional use of cryptocurrencies also reveals a pronounced generational divide: 28% of leaders aged 18 to 24 have already conducted professional transactions in cryptocurrencies, compared to only 2% of those aged 55-64. Female leaders are notably more hesitant, with 59% completely excluding this possibility compared to 35% of male leaders.

Cryptocurrencies are gradually establishing themselves in the French entrepreneurial ecosystem. This revolution is accelerating, as illustrated by Tisséo which, as of today, allows residents of Toulouse to pay for their transport in crypto, reflecting a growing adoption by public and commercial services.
