Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has ended 2025 with its latest BTC purchase. According to its announcement, it completed the quarterly acquisition of 4,279 BTC (worth over $451 million).
With the latest purchase, the Japanese company holds a total of 35,102 BTC, acquired for over $3.78 billion.
According to BitcoinTreasuries, Metaplanet ranks fourth among publicly traded companies globally that hold BTC. It trails Strategy, MARA Holdings, and Twenty One Capital.
In Q4 alone, Metaplanet secured loans worth millions of dollars to bolster its BTC acquisition. For instance, the company raised $280 million last month, using its existing bitcoin holdings as collateral. As of the time of the latest BTC purchase, the loan remained outstanding.
It appears that Metaplanet bought a significant portion of the latest BTC stash at the start of Q4. This is because the firm disclosed that it acquired the digital asset at an average price of $105,412. Notably, the last time BTC traded at this price was in October. Ever since, it has gradually dropped below the $90,000 price mark. At the time of writing, the leading cryptocurrency sold for $87,700, representing a 1.97% decrease in the past 24 hours.
Despite bitcoin’s price drop from the start of Q4 to date, Metaplanet disclosed that it has an 11.9% yield on its total BTC holdings.
Instead of pumping to the news of the BTC acquisition, Metaplanet’s common stock has been on a downtrend. According to Google Finance, it sold for ¥405 ($2.6), representing a 7.95% drop in the past 24 hours.
This suggested that local investors are pessimistic about the company’s decision to continue acquiring bitcoin despite its sluggish price performance this month.
Earlier this month, Metaplanet began stock trading in the United States via American Depositary Receipts under the ticker MPJPY. This asset also saw a price drop following the BTC purchase. At the time of writing, it exchanged hands for $2.74, down 4.2% in the past 24 hours.
