Elon Musk’s Tesla could bring Optimus robots to markets by 2025

Elon Musk has recently announced that he will be revealing Tesla’s first humanoid robot named ‘Optimus,’ which will enter the market by 2025.

This comes at a time when many companies are counting on humanoid robots to meet human labour shortages and perform repetitive tasks in warehouse, retail, logistics and manufacturing industries. Elon Musk, in a conference call with investors, stated that these Optimus robots will be able to perform tasks in factories by the end of 2024.

Musk also mentioned that these robots can perform everyday tasks such as boiling an egg, squatting, dancing, ironing, and yoga among other tasks.

In September last year, Musk introduced Optimus’ prototype, dubbed Bumblebee. Musk predicted that robot sales, apart from the usual EV car sales might become a large part of his business.

Musk’s forecasts regarding Tesla’s robot sales have previously raised concerns, as he had promised various technological initiatives such as the ‘robotaxi’ network, which fell short of expectations. However, Musk is quite confident of these humanoid robots emphasising Tesla’s expertise in AI.

Other humanoid robot ventures

Apart from Tesla, other companies such as Hyundai Motor’s Boston Dynamics and Honda have also been developing humanoid robots for several years. At the beginning of this year, Nvidia’s startup Figure and Microsoft partnered with BMW to deploy humanoid robots in BMW’s U.S. facility.

In February 2024, Figures released a video of its 01 robot making coffee.  Last week, Boston Dynamics revealed an electric platform for its Atlas humanoid robot, which was seen transitioning from a lying down position to seamlessly standing and walking.
