Pro-Israel hackers behind a whopping $100 million exploit of Nobitex, one of Iran’s largest crypto exchanges, have leaked the platform’s source code. This action could put user funds at risk. The source code is the foundation upon which blockchain projects are built, controlling everything from transaction processing to consensus mechanisms.

In the crypto industry, leaking an exchange’s source code can have several implications, including exposing vulnerabilities, facilitating attacks, and revealing business logic that can be exploited. The act could also lead to theft of funds, damage to reputation, and legal consequences.

Unauthorized Access Control Detected

On June 18, 2025, crypto investigator ZachXBT revealed in a Telegram post that bad actors, popularly known as Gonjeshke Darande (Predatory Sparrow), exploited Nobitex of approximately $81.7 million. According to the report, the attacker used a vanity address.

A vanity address is a crypto wallet address that contains a specific, user-defined sequence of characters – such as a name, brand, slogan, or initials. This is not entirely new to the sector. Attackers have used this strategy to exploit victims.

Notably, upon detecting unauthorized access patterns to a portion of its hot wallets, Nobitex swiftly initiated containment protocols. It suspended affected wallets to safeguard digital assets.

The platform has accepted full responsibility for the incident. It also assured affected users that they would receive compensation via the insurance fund and Nobitex resources. Pending a complete investigation, the exchange’s website and app will be temporarily unavailable.

Sources suggest that the Nobitex breach was likely caused by an access control failure, providing bad actors with a clear path into internal systems. It also allowed the hackers to drain hot wallets across multiple blockchain networks.

The multi-million-dollar worth of crypto asset exploits adds to the increasing number of hacks in the crypto sector this year. According to blockchain security firm Certik, over $2.1 billion has been wiped out. The platform revealed that the majority of losses have come from wallet compromises and phishing. It has resulted in increased data leaks that could put user assets at risk.

Could Nobitex be Involved in Illegal Practices?

Meanwhile, the attackers claimed that Nobitex is a tool for financing terrorism and violating sanctions. They stated this as part of the reason they leaked the exchange’s source code. The group added that the crypto platform does not pretend to abide by sanctions. As such, associating with terror financing and other illicit activities will put assets at risk.

Sadly, the announcement comes when Israel and Iran are at war, resulting in 224 deaths and 1, 277 injured in Iran, according to the Guardian. Israel also reported 24 deaths and 592 wounded. Following the attack, the digital market has experienced significant setbacks—the world’s largest crypto asset trades below $105,000 as of the time of writing.
