Australia’s crypto news today focuses on Hostplus. The latest development unveils that Hostplus, one of the largest pension funds in Australia, is preparing to give customers exposure to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. This move signals growing demand for modern, self-directed retirement options.
Crypto News: Australia’s Hostplus Considers Bitcoin
According to the latest reports from the Australian crypto industry, pension fund Hostplus is considering digital asset exposure. Today’s Bloomberg crypto news unveiled that the platform is planning to offer members the option to invest in Bitcoin and other assets.
The fund, which manages over A$150 billion ($105 billion), is looking at adding crypto options through its self-directed plan, ChoicePlus. This plan allows members to manage a small part of their retirement savings on their own. As per the report, this currently makes up about 1% of the fund’s total assets.

While the proposal is awaiting regulatory approval, Hostplus could start offering crypto exposure as early as next financial year. The fund is still reviewing details, including consumer protections and the structure of the offerings.
Chief Investment Officer Sam Sicilia stated – “There’s certainly a demand from some of our members who write in and say, ‘Why can’t I have access to cryptocurrency?’”
Sicilia added that crypto has matured significantly since the fund first looked at it nearly 10 years ago. The firm is now considering not just bitcoin but a wider range of digital assets, possibly including tokenized investments like music rights.
Crypto Makes Slow Inroads into Australian Pension Funds
It is worth noting that Australia’s pension sector has shown only limited interest in cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin. In addition to the latest crypto news, AMP Ltd., which operates as one of Australia’s largest pension and wealth management companies, began investing in Bitcoin through futures trading in 2024.
Most Australian super funds have traditionally favored conservative, low-risk investments, focusing on shares, bonds, and property. This cautious approach reflects strict regulatory oversight and the need to protect members’ retirement savings.
However, growing interest among younger members and the rise of self-directed superannuation options are slowly prompting funds to explore digital assets.
In contrast, the U.S. has taken a more proactive approach. Last August, President Donald Trump signed an executive order allowing 401(k) retirement plans to include cryptocurrency.
Additionally, states like Indiana have passed legislation permitting crypto allocations in certain state retirement schemes. This signals a more open stance on integrating digital assets into retirement systems.
Potential Benefits and Risks of Crypto in Super Funds
According to the latest crypto news, adding bitcoin to superannuation funds could offer members new growth opportunities. Digital assets have shown strong returns over the past decade.
Thus, members can use Hostplus fund exposure to diversify their retirement savings beyond standard investment options, which include shares, bonds, and property. Small crypto allocations offer an attractive investment opportunity for younger members because of their potential to boost long-term returns.
The use of crypto brings multiple dangers for investors. The market encounters extreme price fluctuations. That results in immediate price shifts, affecting the retirement account values of its members.
The regulatory framework currently lacks specific guidelines that require funds to develop their investment products while protecting consumer rights. The use of crypto generates valuable investment possibilities. Yet, it demands extensive preparation, together with a protective strategy to maintain member savings safety.
