Key Insights:

  • Bitcoin price opened strongly this week, after bouncing back above $64,000.
  • Spot flows fueled the momentum with institutions doing the heavy lifting.
  • Derivatives segment demonstrates bullish optimism as funding rates push to 20-month highs, but here’s why this could be a trap.

Bitcoin (BTC) price action on Monday sparked some excitement after the week opened with a slight uptick in demand. An analysis of the demand characteristics revealed that institutions were largely behind the move, prompting analysts to wonder whether this could be a bullish signal or a trap.

Bitcoin price bounced from as low as $62,690 on Monday and peaked at $64,550. This performance was noteworthy because it recovered almost all of Bitcoin’s weekly losses in a single day.

Monday’s BTC price bounce alone may not be as impressive as it seems at first glance. However, what makes it interesting is the cohort of buyers that drove up the price.

Bitcoin Price Gains as Spot BTC ETF Inflows Fuel Bullish Weekly Kick-off

Bitcoin ETFs recorded significant outflows last week. However, weekly price action cooled by only about 3.2%, suggesting those movements did not have much impact.

The reason could be that volumes have remained low, given that Bitcoin has been consolidating within a narrow range. Bitcoin ETF inflows totaled $137.3 million on Monday, indicating institutions were buying back.

Monday’s Bitcoin spot inflows were the highest since 5 August. Here’s why this is significant. Bitcoin’s net spot inflows on the same day amounted to $107.55 million. Slightly lower than the net Bitcoin ETF inflows.

In other words, institutions bought more than the overall market. Hence, the Bitcoin price surge on Monday was institutional positioning. Such an outcome often signals that institutions expect the price to go up, especially when the market is in a low-volume consolidation phase.

However, such buys may also aim to trigger a reaction from the rest of the market. A scenario that could be akin to manipulation, and one that may end up being a bear trap or a trap for derivatives traders.

Bitcoin Funding Rates Spike to a 20-Month High

CryptoQuant data registered a large spike in positive funding rates on Monday. For context, Bitcoin positive funding rates surged to levels last seen over 20 months ago.

Such a large spike indicates that derivatives traders overwhelmingly anticipate a bullish outcome. Moreover, it could signal that derivatives traders are heavily leveraged, which underscores potential liquidation if the price fails to sustain bullish momentum.

This is where the downside risk comes in. Spot flows were already in the red by almost $50 million on Tuesday morning. However, it was also worth noting that shorts took a $70 million hit, meaning the spike in spot inflows ultimately turned into a derivatives shakedown for short sellers.

Derivatives volumes were up over 60% in the last 24 hours, but weak spot follow-through risk triggers another liquidation event. This time, longs are at risk.

The lack of demand follow-through may indicate that the market is still operating in uncertainty. Investors are still looking for more clarity on whether BTC is ready for a recovery or capitulation is on the way.

Interestingly, the spike in institutional inflows also occurred on the same day that Jane Street’s Bitcoin ETF positioning was revealed. The trading firm reportedly acquired $630 million in BTC in Q2, bringing its total holdings to about $1.06 billion.

This may seem like positive news for Bitcoin investors. However, the same firm has been known to engage in counter-positioning. In other words, Bitcoin price may be in for some volatile times ahead.
