Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed a new set of upgrades that place validator privacy at the center of Ethereum’s long-term development strategy. According to Buterin, the latest Lean Ethereum roadmap also reduces the burden on the network’s consensus layer while preparing Ethereum for future security challenges.
According to Buterin’s recent post on X, the updated roadmap expands on ideas outlined in his blog post, The Extremely Lean Chain. He explained that Lean Ethereum is designed to rebuild much of the protocol over the next several years instead of introducing a single network upgrade.
Moreover, the proposal aims to reduce the amount of information stored on the beacon chain. Instead, validators would manage more of their own data and periodically submit zero-knowledge proofs to verify their state. Consequently, Ethereum could lower storage requirements without compromising network integrity.

Validator privacy becomes a core objective of Lean Ethereum
According to Buterin, the roadmap introduces several phased improvements to the consensus chain. Phase 1A removes validator public keys from the beacon chain state. Instead, Ethereum would store a smaller validator index within the deposit tree, reducing the amount of permanent data maintained by the network.
Additionally, Phase 1B removes reward and penalty calculations from the beacon chain’s state transition process. Validators would prove their balances through zero-knowledge technology, allowing the consensus layer to operate with less computational overhead.
Privacy receives even greater attention during Phase 2. According to Buterin, Ethereum would replace its long-term active validator registry with a daily structure. Validators would also register a new public key each day, making it much more difficult to link their activities across different periods.
Furthermore, the proposal introduces a zero-knowledge unlink between staking deposits and withdrawals. Daily re-anonymization would provide another layer of protection by preventing observers from easily tracking validator identities over time.
Besides these privacy enhancements, Buterin suggested adopting a Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus model where validators submit one message during each round. As a result, Ethereum would no longer require surround slashing rules within the redesigned consensus architecture.
Quantum safety rises alongside privacy priorities
Lean Ethereum first emerged in July 2025 as Buterin’s vision for Ethereum’s next decade of development. According to Buterin, the initiative represents Ethereum’s third major evolution following the Merge because it gradually replaces nearly every major protocol component.
He also revealed that the internal roadmap, described as a “strawmap,” has shifted several priorities. Notably, quantum safety now ranks much higher than before, reflecting growing attention toward long-term cryptographic security. Meanwhile, privacy has moved beyond a secondary consideration and now serves as one of the project’s primary design goals.
The latest proposals indicate that Ethereum‘s future upgrades will balance efficiency, privacy, and security together. According to Buterin, Lean Ethereum will continue evolving through multiple improvements over the next three to four years rather than through a single protocol upgrade.
Buterin’s latest roadmap shows that Ethereum’s next development phase extends beyond scalability improvements. Instead, the network is placing stronger emphasis on validator privacy, leaner consensus operations, and long-term resilience as it prepares for its next generation of protocol upgrades.
