Highlights:
- a16z’s X account was briefly hacked on June 19 to promote a fake Solana token.
- Fraudulent posts tricked users with false token launches and giveaways.
- The firm recovered the account quickly and confirmed no involvement in the scam.
a16z Crypto venture capital firm experienced a security breach at its official X account on July 19, 2025. The firm was hijacked by hackers to advertise an impersonated Solana-based token called “$a16z.” The hackers employed the scope of the platform to feed misleading content to more than 850,000 followers.
The attack started with the postings that appeared to be official, containing misleading information about a16z launching their own token. Among the messages was the proposal of a major milestone in the crypto journey of the firm and called on users to interact with a connected wallet. It was a wallet involved in the fraudulent activity, which lured users into investing in a fake token.

A number of other posts also provided fake giveaways and fabricated airdrops. One of them was a $5 million token distribution, which was intended to enhance interaction and create a false sense of belief. Such maneuvers are employed regularly during pump-and-dump schemes to give an advantage over unsuspecting investors. On-chain activity verified a brief price increase of the deceptive token and then declined by almost 90%.
Malicious Content Quickly Removed as a16z Restores Access
In a matter of minutes after the original fake tweet, a16z employees detected the hack and initiated damage control. In order to prevent the additional posts, the account was temporarily removed. The fake tweets were thereafter removed, and a statement was provided to clarify the position of the firm.
Earlier today, our X account was briefly compromised. During that time, the account promoted a token and other fake content — none of which originated from a16z. Apologies for any confusion caused by the clowns who temporarily took over our account.

a16z assured that the hack only led to a breach of its X account. There was no loss in internal systems or data. Moreover, the company assured the followers that the material was not created by its members in regard to the token launch or giveaways. The regular posting was reinstated within a short period after the control was regained.
In addition, there was a swift reaction within the community. The content was marked suspicious by many users before it was deleted. Some of the followers asserted that they had interacted with the wallet or lost money as a result of the scam. Some expressed their concerns about account security, urging the company to increase protection and take into account the responsibility of afflicted users.
Past Hacks Raise Questions About Targeted Attacks on a16z
This was not the only instance of a security breach connected with a16z. The personal X account of an a16z founder, Chris Dixon, was hacked in February 2025. The attack also had false token promotions and other fraudulent crypto projects. Similar to the recent attack, it used the high number of followers of this account to bring more attention to the scam.
Earlier, the X account of ai16z founder Shaw was hacked and a fake Eliza scam link was released. Shaw said he didn't know how the hacker carried out the attack. He has 2FA, a password manager, and a strong password. This attack was carefully planned and targeted. He apologized to…

These repeated breaches are indicative that the company might be the target of bad actors. Users can steal the credibility of well-recognized accounts by impersonating them and lying to the community. The approach in both incidents is somewhat similar, which begs the question regarding the security of the platform and the crypto community at large.
a16z was quick to manage the situation despite the scare. The damage was mitigated because of the prompt reaction of the firm and its clear communication. Regular repetition of these attacks, however, shows the necessity of more powerful digital safeguards.
