Crypto exchange Gate has secured a payment institution license in Malta, giving the company fresh regulatory ground to expand its stablecoin and fiat payment services across the European Union.

Gate announced on Thursday that its Malta-based arm, Gate Technology, received approval from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). Notably, the license falls under the EU’s Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) framework, which governs payment services across the bloc.

With this approval, Gate can offer regulated payment services throughout the EU by “passporting” its Maltese authorization into other member states. The move allows the exchange to operate beyond crypto trading and custody, expanding into broader payment infrastructure that includes stablecoin and fiat transactions.

Additionally, the crypto exchange said that the new license supports its strategy to connect traditional financial systems with Web3 services in Europe. By combining regulated payment rails with crypto capabilities, Gate aims to position itself as a more integrated financial services provider in the region.

Building on MiCA Crypto Authorization

The payments license adds to Gate’s growing regulatory presence in Europe. On October 1, 2025, the exchange announced that it had secured authorization under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). The license allows Gate to provide crypto exchange and custody services across EU member states.

Under EU rules, crypto companies that want to offer payment services involving stablecoins must hold either a Payment Institution license under PSD2 or an Electronic Money Institution authorization. Moreover, by obtaining the Payment Institution license, Gate now meets the regulatory requirements to expand its stablecoin payment offerings legally across the bloc.

The company’s flagship exchange serves more than 49 million users globally, according to its statement. However, Gate has not publicly disclosed how many of those users are based in the EU.

Nonetheless, with both MiCA and PSD2 approvals in place, Gate has strengthened its regulatory standing in Europe. The dual licensing structure gives the exchange more flexibility to compete in the region’s fast-evolving digital asset and payments market, where compliance plays a central role in long-term growth.
