Blockchain payments firm Ripple has announced via an official press release a $25 million commitment to support the United States education sector through its stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD). Interestingly, the move marks one of the first large‑scale uses of a crypto‑based stablecoin in philanthropic giving.

$25M for U.S. Education Sector

Ripple said the fund aims to improve access to educational resources, promote academic achievement, and bolster economic resilience nationwide. Ripple will allocate most of the RLUSD funds to its non-profit partners, DonorsChoose and Teach For America.

Distribution will begin during Teacher Appreciation Week. Thousands of classroom project requests on DonorsChoose will receive RLUSD grants starting immediately. On the other hand, Teach For America announced it will channel its allocation toward expanding the Ignite tutoring program. The fund will also aid the launch of a STEM Innovation Challenge to fund student‑led projects.

Commenting on the initiative, Brad Garlinghouse, Ripple’s chief executive officer (CEO), said:

“Together, we hope to inspire others to do the same, starting with Teacher Appreciation Week, and leading into the rest of the year to support students and teachers with the resources they need to build a stronger future for themselves and their communities.”

Meanwhile, applications for the RLUSD Education Fund opened on May 5, 2025, via Ripple’s Impact portal, inviting public schools, nonprofits, and education-related tech startups to submit funding proposals.

Why RLUSD Funding?

RLUSD was launched in December 2024 as a fully backed U.S. dollar stablecoin. It has received approval from the New York Department of Financial Services and trades crypto exchanges Kraken and Bitstamp.

Ripple claims its use of RLUSD is intended to facilitate funding and pioneer blockchain technology to address resource needs in U.S. classrooms. The announcement noted that stablecoins now account for over half of all on‑chain transaction volume, highlighting their growing viability for grantmaking.

Philanthropy — Not New to Crypto Industry

Ripple is not the first to explore the philanthropic path. Last year, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele donated 2 BTC, valued at $133,000 at the time, to the Students Helping Honduras initiative. The donation went directly from Bukele’s wallet to philanthropist Shin Fujiyama. The funding helped to finance the construction of 1,000 schools across Honduras.

Binance had also leveraged crypto for relief efforts by donating $3 million to the Spanish Red Cross in November 202. The fund was aimed at helping communities devastated by floods in the Valencia region. It aided the provision of food, shelter, and medical assistance to displaced residents and enabled the Red Cross to mobilize resources more swiftly.
