Elon Musk Unveils xAI’s Grok. What Can Users Expect?

Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has unveiled its latest creation, an AI model named Grok, which seems poised to challenge the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Musk’s teasers on Twitter on November 4 shed spark on this development. 

Grok, a name recently trademarked by xAI, appears to be a conversational question-answering AI model, potentially drawing from a knowledge base similar to ChatGPT and other text-generating models such as Meta’s Llama 2.

Elon Musk’s First AI Model – Only for Selected Group

According to Musk, Grok boasts real-time access to information on X. Much like ChatGPT, it possesses internet browsing capabilities, allowing it to scour the web for the most up-to-date information on specific topics. Also, Musk hinted that Grok would exercise caution in responding to sensitive queries, refusing to provide instructions on potentially harmful activities.

Notably, Grok’s responses seem to have a touch of humor, as displayed in its reply to a question about making cocaine, which differs from ChatGPT’s more straightforward responses. It remains unclear whether these humorous replies are pre-programmed or a deliberate design choice, as Musk suggested in a tweet.

Further, Musk announced that xAI would release Grok to a select group, showing the company’s commitment to making its latest AI model accessible. He revealed that all subscribers to X’s recently launched Premium+ plan, which comes with a $16 monthly fee for ad-free access to X, will gain access to Grok once it exits the early beta phase.

This development comes nearly a year after OpenAI’s ChatGPT captured the global imagination, leading to a significant uptick in the adoption of generative AI technology by businesses and users alike. The introduction of Grok from xAI promises to intensify the competition in the AI landscape and offers an intriguing alternative to the world of conversational AI models.
