The Ethereum Foundation has staked a record 22,517 ETH, worth about $46 million, in a single transaction, marking its largest ever move to put idle assets to work.
The deposit follows a smaller 2,016-ETH stake last month and brings the nonprofit’s staked holdings to roughly 17% of its total treasury. With this move, the foundation now holds approximately 147,471 ETH, equivalent to about $302 million at current prices.
The decision aligns with its publicly outlined 2025 treasury policy, which calls for gradually deploying idle reserves into yield-generating activities. The returns support core research, development programs, and ecosystem grants, reducing reliance on occasional asset sales or external fundraising.
By staking 22,517 ETH, the foundation temporarily removes these coins from the circulating liquid supply.
On Ethereum’s proof-of-stake (PoS) network, staked ETH helps secure the blockchain and earns rewards funded by transaction fees and protocol issuance. This deposit marginally strengthens network security while generating compounding returns for the foundation.
The foundation has staked just one-sixth of its ETH so far, keeping most of its holdings liquid to cover operations or adapt to market changes. The approach is similar to how traditional institutions move only part of their reserves into investments that earn returns, while maintaining flexibility.
The stake comes as ETH trades around $2,040, with the total amount of staked ether on the network continuing to rise since Ethereum’s 2022 switch to proof-of-stake.
The Ethereum Foundation’s move to stake portions of its ETH treasury shows a more disciplined approach to managing its assets. By putting idle reserves to work through protocol staking, the nonprofit can generate steady funding for long-term projects without having to sell ETH on the open market.
