Coinbase Abandons the Base App Name and Turns Coinbase Wallet Into a Multichain Trading Hub

Coinbase restored the Coinbase Wallet name on Sept. 10, 2026, ending a little more than a year of branding the self-custodial product as the Base App. The change recasts the app as a multichain trading platform, rather than the social-centered “everything app” Coinbase had introduced in 2025, according to The Block.

The restored name puts Coinbase’s established wallet brand back at the center of a product intended to give users access to assets and trading activity across several blockchain networks. It also marks a clear change in emphasis from the Base App’s original pitch, which placed social interaction alongside payments, messaging, mini-apps and trading.

Base App name reversal

Coinbase renamed Coinbase Wallet to Base App in July 2025. In its launch announcement, Base listed social networking, mini-apps, chat, payments and trading as functions available in one place.

The September 2026 reversal restored the Coinbase Wallet name.

The Block reported that Coinbase was positioning the product as a multichain trading platform. The change places trading access and asset availability at the center of the product’s framing, replacing the emphasis on an experience tied closely to the Base ecosystem and built around social features.

The name change alone does not show which elements of that earlier social-led experience remain available or how Coinbase will prioritize them in future updates. It does show that the product is no longer being presented primarily as an all-purpose social app.

Multichain trading tools

Base, Robinhood Chain, Solana, Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Monad, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon and Avalanche are among the networks Coinbase Wallet is designed to support. Its support documentation lists in-app decentralized-exchange conversions across multiple supported networks.

Ryan Kass, Coinbase Wallet’s product head, said the product includes onchain perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid, prediction markets and tokenized stocks, according to The Block’s report.

These features put decentralized-exchange activity, perpetual futures, prediction markets and tokenized equities under the Coinbase Wallet banner. The product is therefore being presented as access to multiple ecosystems and markets from one wallet, rather than as a product centered on social features.

That positioning contrasts with the July 2025 Base App launch, when trading appeared alongside social networking, mini-apps, messaging and payments.

Self-custody and network changes

The updated Coinbase Wallet experience remains self-custodial: users retain control of their recovery phrase and assets, according to Coinbase’s wallet support guidance.

Coinbase says Dogecoin, Litecoin and several legacy networks were no longer supported after Aug. 15, 2026. The wallet’s multichain strategy broadens its trading-oriented reach across the networks named in Coinbase’s current documentation while withdrawing support from certain older networks.
