Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, David Schwartz, has made a bold revelation regarding the ongoing legal case against crypto figure Roger Ver. In a recent post, Schwartz implied that the charges go beyond taxes and are part of a deeper, long-standing effort to silence Ver’s ideology.
According to Schwartz, U.S. authorities have targeted Ver for years due to his libertarian beliefs and support for financial freedom. Apparently, the pressure and the persecution behind the decision to renounce his U.S. citizenship were more significant than financial issues. As per Schwartz, the case goes deeper, but he is not allowed to say much more because of a non-disclosure agreement.

Ver, known in the crypto space as “Bitcoin Jesus,” was arrested in Spain in May 2024 following a U.S. extradition request. American prosecutors say that Ver did not report 131,000 BTC during his decision to renounce American citizenship, which resulted in his not paying $50 million in exit taxes. Mail fraud and filing false tax documents are the latest charges against him.
Ripple CTO Hints at Deeper Campaign Against Ver
Schwartz’s comments painted a picture of a deliberate and targeted effort against Ver. He described the actions against him as a consistent campaign of persecution rather than a single legal issue. In his words, the campaign is “way more evil than most people realize.”
Despite Ver’s controversial moves, including backing Bitcoin Cash in a split from Bitcoin’s original direction, Schwartz maintained that Ver acted based on conviction.
He highlighted that Ver strongly believed in his work, mainly when it came to defending decentralized finance and personal freedom.
Ver remains in Spain on bail as his extradition case continues. The crypto community is closely watching and questioning the real motives behind the charges. To Ripple’s CTO, this case means more than just a legal problem—it reveals how future creators could be treated by the authorities.
