There is a new wave of bullishness in the cryptocurrency market, with crypto ETP filings increasing to unprecedented heights, which is an indication of the increasing institutional involvement in digital assets. On October 21, Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas announced that 155 crypto ETF filings have been filed since the beginning of 2024 in 35 different cryptocurrencies, the largest number ever.

Crypto ETP Filings Expected to Soar

According to Balchunas, the influx was historic and stated that the overall number may go beyond 200 crypto ETP filings in the coming year as more asset managers vie to roll out new investment funds based on crypto.  Balchunas shared on X (formerly Twitter):

“There’s now 155 crypto ETP filings tracking 35 different digital assets. Could easily end up seeing over 200 hit the market in the next 12 months. Total land rush.”

The analyst explained that these numbers indicate pending crypto ETP submissions and do not cover those ETFs that are already trading which is why Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are not at the top of the list. “This is only filings. Does not have ETFs in market. This is why Bitcoin is not at the top or Ether since so many of them passed through the SEC. Such are only the ones waiting in line, he added.

Altcoins Gain Momentum in ETP Filings

There are 23 crypto ETP filings each of Solana (SOL) and Bitcoin (BTC), and 20 of XRP, according to the data. Ether (ETH) 16, and basket funds ETPs tracking multiple cryptocurrencies 10 filings.

Other prominent holdings are Litecoin (LTC) with 5, followed by Avalanche (AVAX), Dogecoin (DOGE) and Polkadot (DOT) with 4 each. In the meantime, SEI, Hedera (HBAR), Sui, Binance Coin (BNB), and Cardano (ADA) have respective 3 crypto ETP filings.

Institutional Interest Strengthens Amid SEC Momentum

The market analysts perceive this spike to be a positive sign to the wider crypto ETP market. The increase in applications is indicative that issuers are poised to be approved by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), especially in the wake of the regulator earlier this year making landmark rulings to approve spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.

The SEC action to accept generic listing standards has also emboldened asset managers to offer more crypto ETPs, hoping more regulatory green lights would ensue in the near future.

Increased Access Strengthens Crypto ETP Ecosystem

Supporters believe that the increased availability of crypto ETPs may lead to increased liquidity, improved transparency, and the establishment of the digital assets role in conventional financial portfolios. The rise in filings is being interpreted by most as an inflection point in the mainstreaming of cryptocurrencies as investment products as the institutional appetite of the sector expands.

Having over 150 crypto ETPs already on the waitlist and dozens more more to come, analysts believe the crypto ETP ecosystem is entering a new stage of maturity and competition one that potentially will revolutionize how global investors can access digital assets.

Conclusion

The institutional involvement and maturity of the market is indicated by the record level of crypto ETP filings, which are the most significant occurrence in the digital asset industry. With increased regulatory clarity and investor demand, analysts think that the expanding crypto ETP market may transform the investing approach of the world and entrench the long-term financial applicability of cryptocurrencies.
