In an official disclosure made on Wednesday, May 7th, 2025, the Japanese investment firm, Metaplanet, announced the purchase of 555 BTC at an average price of approximately $96,134 per Bitcoin, totaling $53.4 million.
According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by CEO Simon Gerovich, this acquisition brings the company’s total holdings to 5,555 BTC. These holdings were acquired at an aggregate cost of $481.5 million, averaging approximately $86,672 per Bitcoin. The company also reports achieving a YTD 2025 Bitcoin Yield of 136.7%.
“In Japanese, the number 5 is pronounced “Go”, so today we’re shouting: Go go go go — to the moon and beyond,” Gerovich enthusiastically declared on X.
Metaplanet Buying Spree
Metaplanet started buying Bitcoin in April 2024 and has kept increasing the amount it owns. The company has said it wants 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025. It reached half this goal last month, showing it is moving quickly toward its target.
Following the news of additional bitcoin, the firm’s stock price surged 13.3%, reflecting positive market sentiment. Trading remains active, suggesting potential for further fluctuations as the market responds to these developments.
Besides investing in cryptocurrency, Metaplanet also wants to grow its business in the United States. Last week, the company said its board approved creating a U.S. company in Miami, Florida, expanding its reach.
“We want to move faster by creating Metaplanet Treasury Corp. in Florida. Florida is becoming a popular place for Bitcoin companies and new financial ideas. It is known for being good for business and becoming a global center for money and technology,” the company said.
Notably, Metaplanet is the biggest public company in Asia, owning Bitcoin and being the 11th in the world. Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy is still in first place, owning 555,450 BTC.
Raises Funds for Bitcoin Acquisition
Metaplanet released more bonds, worth $25 million. These funds are solely dedicated to buying more Bitcoin. This is the 13th time the company has released bonds, just one week after the 12th release, which also raised the same amount.
According to a CoinTab report, the firm sold bonds and raised 3.6 billion JPY (about US$23 million). They plan to use this money to buy more Bitcoin. This was the 12th time selling bonds, which shows that they are actively finding ways to fund their Bitcoin-buying goals.
Metaplanet also noted that it is selling 3.6 billion JPY ($23 million) in bonds to increase its Bitcoin holdings directly. The company said that the Board of Directors approved this fundraising.
