Prominent Ethereum developer Dankrad Feist has taken a major step by joining Tempo, a new Layer 1 blockchain initiative backed by Stripe and Paradigm. His move marks a significant shift within the Ethereum ecosystem, as Feist has long been recognized for his deep influence on Ethereum’s technical direction and research advancements.

According to Dankrad Feist, the opportunity to build within a payments-focused ecosystem reignited his original vision for crypto adoption. He emphasized that Tempo presents a rare chance to bring digital payments to scale through both strong technical innovation and effective distribution.

Feist joined the Ethereum Foundation in 2018 as a part-time researcher before quickly gaining prominence. He played a key role in the creation of Danksharding, a sharding design aimed at improving Ethereum’s Layer 2 scalability.

During recent leadership changes within the Ethereum Foundation, he was appointed as a strategic advisor for L1 scaling and user experience, reflecting his deep involvement in core development.

Community Reaction and Vision for Tempo

Feist’s departure has drawn mixed reactions across the Ethereum community. Bankless co-founder David Hoffman described it as an “incredible loss for Ethereum,” while Ryan Sean Adams remarked that Tempo now attracts “former Ethereum OGs” who still share Ethereum’s core ideals but seek new directions.

In past years, Feist faced criticism when he and colleague Justin Drake accepted advisory roles at EigenLayer, which some viewed as a conflict of interest. Both later stepped down, pledging to decline future offers of that nature.

Despite leaving the Foundation, Feist insisted he will remain engaged with Ethereum’s community. He described Tempo as a complementary platform, emphasizing its open-source structure and shared commitment to permissionless systems.

Tempo’s Growing Role in Blockchain Payments

Tempo, described by Stripe CEO Patrick Collison as “optimized for high-scale, real-world financial services applications,” is EVM-compatible and designed for companies such as Anthropic, Deutsche Bank, DoorDash, and Shopify.

Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin praised Feist’s contributions, noting his leadership in areas like Danksharding and consensus research, and wished him success in his new venture.

Feist’s move signals a growing interest among Ethereum veterans in expanding blockchain applications beyond traditional decentralized finance, pointing to a new phase in crypto’s evolution toward global-scale payments.
