A bitcoin user mistakenly paid nearly one whole BTC as a transaction fee while sending just $10 to the crypto exchange Kraken. The fee amounted to 0.9999 BTC, valued at about $105,831 at the time.
Blockchain monitoring platform Whale Alert later spotted the error and reported it on X. They noted that almost an entire bitcoin had been paid for a simple transfer.

Previous Record-Breaking Bitcoin Fee Errors
The $10.62 transaction cost stood out as an extreme overpayment, since Bitcoin’s average high-priority fee currently sits around $0.30, meaning the user paid roughly 352,000 times more than necessary.
Although the $105,831 mistake is substantial, it does not rank as the most expensive crypto transaction error. In November 2023, a Bitcoin user lost 83.65 BTC in fees, valued at approximately $3.1 million.
There have been other similar incidents that shocked the crypto community. In December 2024, CoinTab reported that a user paid around 8.1 BTC, worth roughly $804,000, to send a transaction valued at just $13,900.
Whale Alert also confirmed the transaction on-chain, noting that the apex coin was trading above $99,000 during that period. The report showed that the user spent several hundred thousand dollars in gas fees. The transfer should have cost only a few dollars.
Accidental Fees Across the Crypto Ecosystem
Accidental fees aren’t limited to Bitcoin; Ethereum users have also faced similar costly mistakes over the years. In one incident, an Ethereum wallet owner mistakenly spent 288 ETH, valued at about $700,000, on a single transaction. Another case involved a user paying roughly $89,000 in gas fees to transfer 0.87 ETH, which was worth around $2,262.
NFT transactions have also experienced similar errors, showing that high fees can occur beyond regular crypto transfers. For example, an NFT collector once paid 1,055 ETH in gas fees, equivalent to approximately $2.8 million. The collection they bought was valued at only $1,000.
These recurring cases highlight how a simple misclick or technical error can result in massive financial losses. They also serve as a reminder for crypto users to double-check transaction details before confirming any transfer.
