NFT marketplace OpenSea has acquired Rally, a mobile-first crypto app focused on on-chain token activity. The deal aims to enhance OpenSea’s mobile presence and provide a unified experience for both NFTs and tokens.

Rally’s co-founder Chris Maddern announced the acquisition on social media, adding that he will join OpenSea as Chief Technology Officer. His co-founder, Christine Hall, will also join the company’s leadership team.

OpenSea to Upgrade Mobile App

Rally launched in 2021 to make on-chain assets more accessible to a broader audience beyond early adopters. According to co-founder Chris Maddern, the acquisition by OpenSea marks an expansion of that mission, not a shift away from it.

The NFT marketplace now plans to leverage Rally’s expertise in mobile-first design and token interfaces to enhance its mobile app. Notably, a new version of OpenSea Mobile is expected to be released in 2025, featuring enhanced tools for discovering and managing digital assets.

Maddern added that the goal is to build a unified platform where NFTs and tokens complement each other, rather than compete with one another. OpenSea aims to support both cultural and financial use cases for on-chain assets, including NFTs and memecoins.

OpenSea Eyes Mobile-Led Future

The acquisition comes as the crypto sector shifts from centralized platforms to more on-chain, decentralized environments. OpenSea aims to lead this transition by prioritizing simplicity, mobile accessibility, and user-friendly experiences.

Chris Maddern believes the next phase of crypto adoption depends on making tools like decentralized finance (DeFi), perpetual markets, and token management more approachable. He also emphasized that artificial intelligence will play a key role in enhancing safety and usability.

For now, the Rally app will remain active. Users will eventually be guided through a migration to the new OpenSea Mobile platform. Maddern thanked the Rally community for its continued support, noting that user feedback will help shape the new product.

OpenSea sees mobile access as central to daily crypto engagement. With the acquisition, it hopes to turn its app into a go-to hub for all on-chain activities.
